If you take the view that you pay for past performance, which in most cases is true, this isn't a bad deal for either the Tigers or Cabrera. As he gets older, he will need to make sure he keeps his weight under control, but he does have a bat that will age well as a DH.

I don't think any player is worth that money, and TV contracts or not, that is insane to give to any player, especially to someone when they are 40.

Being brutally honest here: Ilitch may not even be alive to see that contract fulfilled by Cabrera, so I could definitely see that being a reason
