His shot selection is awful and it detracts from what could be an All-Star caliber player. In 2009-10, he only attempted a handful of 3pters all season, less than 10, and it seemed like he had turned the corner. He was still taking way too many 15-19 footers (aka the least efficient shot in the game) but he had at least given up on the perimeter.
Then he regressed completely under Larry Drew and began attempting 2-3 treys a game again. Even worse, he actually started making a few more. He was up to around 34%, which is of course a solid percentage for a front court player and one that would make you think he's "multidimensional" ... but with Smoove, actually making a long shot is the worst thing that can happen, because it means he'll keep shooting. And even if he does make a decent percentage of them, he's still doing that INSTEAD of what he does best, which is attack the rim. Any jump shot Smith takes, make or miss, is a wasted opportunity for him to use his best skills.
Until he truly embraces that he's ONLY a post scorer, he will not maximize his full ability. Very befuddling and infuriating player. Because of his mercurial ways, he is the team's most valuable player. Whether or not the team plays efficiently is entirely dependent on how much Josh Smith feels like remembering his strengths and forgetting his weaknesses on that given day.Comment

If he decided to go full on Z-Bo from last season. Atlanta would be hell to defend.Comment

The draft is always full of memorable moments that only Bill Simmons can break down. Here's 60 of them.
2004: The Hawks take high schooler Josh Smith as Jay Bilas rips the pick to shreds. "If you had to pick which guy was most likely to be a bust in the first round, it would be this guy," he said. "He has no right hand, and he can't shoot." That's followed by poor Smith having to defend himself to Stu Scott, capped off by a phenomenal exchange:

Its funny that Josh Smith has probably had the second best career behind Dwight Howard of the 2004 draft. This is why I really don't pay much attention to these analyst during drafts, because the only difference between them and anyone else is that they have a platform to make their comments look foolish.

LOL, I remember that Rafael Araujo pick....at the time I was like who is this big Brazilian with all the tattoos looking like Shrek? Then I had to remember it was Toronto picking (sorry Kuzzy)Comment

Yeah, as he was walking up to the podium Bilas was blaring over the loud speakers. Very awkward. "If I had to pick one guy to be a bust, it'd be Josh Smith. No right hand, no work ethic, lazy, completely disinterested in getting better, blah, blah, blah"
Might have been a blessing actually because maybe it motivated Smith, who turned out to be a steal as the 18th pick. Unfortunately we had already taken Josh Childress with the #6 pick that night or else I'd say that for once Billy Knight actually had a good draft.Comment

Yeah Josh Smith is in the discussion behind Howard.
It's basically
Josh Smith
Lulz Deng
Emeka Okafor
Andre Iguodala
For that honor behind Dwight.
Ben Gordon was doing nicely until he went to Detroit and fell of the face ofthe Earth.Comment

LOL, one thing I love to do is look at old drafts and see how guys have panned out. Remember when the there was a big debate over taking Okafor or Howard? LOL, but Okafor was the proven commodity....he has experience...Dwight Howard weighs like 150 pounds!!Comment

As much as I despise Deng..or the overratedness of Deng, by Chicago fans the draft pick relative to other players taken behind Dwight wasn't bad.Comment
