RMU solves their Blue Devil problem by playing the best 36 minutes they've played this season in a 68-60 win. The win was #500 as a D1 program.
The score was 59-41 with 3:54 left, then CCSU frosh Kyle Vinales scored 16 points (including four threes) to bring the Blue Devils close. Six free throws from Velton Jones sealed the win.
Vinales led all scorers with 32 and proved why he's a lock to take home NEC Freshman of the Year this season. Robby Ptacek (who has God's Gift tatted on his triceps - you're not Andrew Quarless) added 14, while NEC POTY Ken Horton just had two points in 26 minutes.
RMU got points from everyone. Lijah Thompson had 15, Russell Johnson had 14, Mike McFadden had nine and lone senior Lawrence Bridges and Jones had eight a piece. Jones and fellow starting guard Coron Williams combined for just 12 points, which makes the domination (for most of the night at least) even more surprising.
The Colonials were again without starting freshman forward Lucky Jones with a knee injury. He should be able to go next Thursday when RMU plays @ Sacred Heart.
The eight spots in the NEC Tournament are locked up:
1. Long Island (21-7, 15-1)
2. Wagner (23-4, 14-2)
3. Robert Morris (21-8, 12-4)
3. St. Francis (NY) (15-12, 12-4)
5. Quinnipiac (15-12, 8-8)
5. Central Connecticut State (11-15, 8-8)
5. Monmouth (10-19, 8-8)
8. Sacred Heart (7-9, 13-16)
- St. Francis (NY) holds the tiebreaker over RMU because of a 81-68 win on January 28th. They play @ Monmouth and @ Fairleigh Dickinson (2-25, 1-15) to close the regular season, so the Colonials need to win one more game than them.
- Gets interesting in seeds 5-8 though. Quinnipiac holds tiebreakers over CCSU and Monmouth based on wins over them, but was swept by Sacred Heart. CCSU split with Sacred Heart and loses to Monmouth on a tiebreaker. Monmouth has some tiebreakers but finishes off the regular season with games against St. Francis (NY) and Long Island.
- For those who don't know, NEC Tournament starts on March 8th and higher seed gets home court throughout. First round games take place on the 8th (Thursday), then semi-finals on the 11th (Sunday) and the title game will be on 14th (Wednesday) and on ESPN2 that night.

WHITEOUT
The team traveled to Connecticut today for the last two games of the regular season - @Sacred Heart and @Quinnipiac. Two wins and a St. Francis (NY) loss will give the Colonials the #3 seed in the NEC Tournament.

SACRED HEART TONIGHT GET PUMPED
The Pioneers are a scary team. Nothing to speak of from down low, but they can shoot from outside and Shane Gibson is one of the best small conference scorers in America. We don't defend the three well so it should be interesting.
