Why is everyone acting like Monta is a bad player?
If you can bring him off the bench or bring his usage down, he's excellent.
He's a career 20-5-4 guy on 46% shooting with an above-average TS% of 53%. Idk why people are acting like he's a cancer. He just isn't a #1 guy. If the Hawks really wanna be Spurs-East or whatever then they need that loose-cannon 6th man like Manu that can torch teams from time to time.
EDIT: ^^^ It looks like they're not getting Monta though. Why the fuck do they want Jennings? Just let Schroeder start...Comment

I think that has a lot to do with him being paired with Jennings. I cannot think of two worse players to pair in a backcourt.Comment

25.7% Usage Rate and a 48% eFG, yeah, I'm good.Comment

I remember going to a Bucks game this past season and wow Ellis and Jennings had no chemistry at all, Jennings seem to able to somewhat create when Ellis was off the court. And Ellis is just god awful dude just keeps chucking up 3's after he misses the first 5.Comment

I don't hate Monta, but he's your classic "he should be on a bad team" player. Ain't no W in Monta.Comment

Yeah, Monta is fine for what he is I guess, but it's the complete opposite of what the supposed plan was. Ball movement, spacing, sensible spending and financial restraint ... That's supposed to the plan, bringing in a shameless chucker on a whim just because he's a big name flies in the face of all that.Comment

What is Atlanta's goal right now?
Rebuilding? Restructuring the roster in an attempt to contend for a playoff spot? Whats the deal?
I thought rebuilding, but then going out and signing Monta is kind of counter productive to rebuilding...so holla @ me.Comment

However, as you say, the Monta acquisition, if they are really serious about that, is a curious step for a team presumably trying to remain flexible and fiscally sound. Not to mention the on-court contradictions a player like Monta would present for a coach like Bud who is trying to employ a more Euro-centric D-and-3s model.
So, I guess it's similar to the Daryl Morey model of 3-4 years ago? Bide your time, don't over extend, but have the tradable bulk assets and cap space readily available should a James Harden type deal fall in your lap. From there, you can attract better free agents, but for the time being they don't fux with the A. (Sadly, not even guys born and raised there currently view it as a viable destination as we've seen.)
No idea at this point though, really hoping the Monta and Jennings things are smoke screens. Would rather just bring Teague back over either of those knuckleheads.Last edited by NAHSTE; 07-08-2013, 03:21 PM.Comment

Since Danny Ferry has shed all the awful contracts (Joe, Marvin, etc.) you'd think it would be to rebuild under a more fiscally responsible model. Ostensibly, the cap space was being cleared out for the Dwight pipe dream, and having failed that I guess they want to collect affordable assets who won't hamstring the flexibility long term. However, as you say, signing Monta would be a curious move for a team trying to remain flexible down the road.

Like you said, shed those big nasty contracts and rebuild...the first set of moves look like that...drafting two top foreigners with their mid-round picks (a big and a point guard), letting Smith walk, letting Teague test the market, letting ZaZa go...even signing players like Millsap (who will come in and play well, for only two years) and Carroll (role player, for two years) are good moves that don't strap you while filling out a rebuilding roster.
Then Monta...just doesn't make a ton of sense unless its on a really short deal. Jennings is a little better, but again, these are guys on short deals while you are rebuilding...ok...I mean, you do have to fill your cap up...but I didn't expect those guys to want those types of deals.Comment

The Horncats have really had a nice off-season to date, the best in franchise history by far.
- Love the Zeller pick. While there were some great ones on the board, he's a high-character kid who was the most athletic kid in his class. I feel like he was big-time victim of being picked at as a sophomore, much like Harrison Barnes was. He'll be great on the pick-n-roll
- Al Jefferson is a very nice signing. While not a good defender by any means, he's on an affordable contract with an opt out after year 2, and he gives us the inside scoring punch we have been sorely lacking.
- Keeping Gerald Henderson is key. Don't really think you'll see anyone try and snag him, but he's a valuable piece to this team and his return will bolster an improving lineup.
- Lastly, Steve Clifford is doing & saying all of the right things as a coach so far. We'll see how he does in game action, but he's assembled a great coaching staff (Patrick Ewing and Mark Price) and he has the players full attention. He's making sure he plays to MKG's strengths with more post-ups and cuts, and also focusing on keeping things simple for the young guys.
Overall, very encouraged about this team going forward. Don't think we'll have a chance to snag Wiggins with how badly some teams are 'rebuilding', but I think we pick up another good piece in a good draft and possibly contend for a playoff spot in 2014-15.Comment
