LSU played an exhibition NAIA Xavier (LA) last night. Not much to take from such a mismatch, it was 42-11 at halftime and the final score was 80-45, so this is mainly for Yawk's benefit. Anyway, here are my thoughts...

    - Xavier is apparently nicknamed the GOLDRUSH - couldn't stop laughing every time the announcers said it.
    - Andre Stringer hit 6-11 from 3-point land and is clearly the guy who will fill the primary sniper role. The team is still looking for another reliable shooter to emerge since the 5'9 Stringer has trouble getting his shot off vs. length and/or aggressive close outs. As a team, LSU shot 13-27 from deep.
    - If there's one glaring weakness, it's a familiar one to last season. This team just can't shoot free throws for whatever reason. They made just 9-19, which means they shot worse (47%) from the free throw line than they did on 3-pointers (48%).
    - The front court is incredibly long and athletic. JOB didn't do much in limited action -- 9 points and 11 boards in just 18 minutes -- but he's the known constant of this team. What was more intriguing was the play of his freshman front court mates. Jarrell Martin was a bit out of control at times and blew some easy transition buckets, but the athletcism jumps out at you when you see him run the floor. He even brought the ball up a few times on fast breaks, displaying the kind of versatility we haven't seen since Anthony Randolph. Jordan Mickey was the star of the night, he finished with 8 blocks while adding 12 points and 6 boards. John Odo, another freshman, didn't register a point but secured 11 rebounds in 15 minutes. Guess he's the Bismack Biyombo of the squad.
    - Team could be really good defensively. In addition to Mickey's 8 blocks, Anthony Hickey had 5 steals and the GODLRUSH was held to 17-68 from the floor and just 1-15 from range. Also highly possible that Xavier is just poop.
    - Another freshman, 6'6 point guard Tim Quarterman, started the game and should add a nice compliment to the hyperactivity of Hickey. When Quarterman is in the game alongside Malik Morgan in the backcourt, LSU can roll out a lineup that goes 6'6-6'4-6'8-6'9-6'9. Or, LSU can go small with Hickey and Stringer and press like their hair is on fire.

    Conclusion:

The competition was obviously several steps below what UM ASS will provide, but it was clear when using the #eyetest that Johnny Jones has a lot of options at his disposal. There are 7-8 legit SEC players in the rotation and the components will allow a multitude of different looks.

Good win for the NEC last night as St. Francis Brooklyn beat Miami in OT, 66-62. Hurricanes aren't the team they were last year, but still a nice upset for a team picked to finish seventh in the conference.

On paper they look amazing with one of the deepest guard rotations in the country. Throw in athletic wings in Parker and Hood and its a dangerous squad.

UNC looks great on paper too. Great length down low

Washington huskies will surprise some people and make the tournament. I expect a lot from Wilcox and the incimg freshman Nigel Williams Gods, this guy is a stud. If only Aaron Gordon would have followed him instead of choosing the devil himself Sean Miller and the Arizona wildcats

Yeah, I agree with you, just think it's too early to be propping up certain teams ahead of others.

Robert Morris 86, Savannah State 66

                            - New foul rules really showed last night. Both teams were in the double bonus with seven minutes to go in the half. Kavon Stewart in particular got called for the same foul three times in a row.
                            - Karvel Anderson's wrist is finally healthy and he showed it. Playing with a broken wrist last season, Anderson still managed to shoot 44% from behind the arc and establish himself as one of the best mid-major shooters in the country. Last night, Anderson started off slow and seemed hesitant to challenge his wrist, but he dropped 18 of 21 points in the second half and made five of eight threes.
                            - Speaking of finally being healthy, Mike McFadden also is for the first time at RMU. The senior center had 12 and 9, including a very nice fastbreak dunk that shocked a few of the writers.
                            - JUCO transfer Chuck Oliver had an impressive debut, dropping 12 (3-5 FG, 2-4 3PT) in 13 minutes off the bench. Because Coron Williams transferred to Wake Forest in the off-season (who had 8 points in 19 minutes in WF's 89-78 win over Colgate), the Colonials needed a shooter to couple with Anderson. After last night, Oliver seems like the most likely candidate to fill that role.

                            Next Game: 11/12 @ Lafayette (0-1)

                              Georgia 72, Wofford 52

Mark Fox played nine guys off the bench, 6 players had at least six points or more. Distributed the ball around very well, there isn't going to be one singular star on this team and every game is most likely going to be a huge team effort. The frontcourt will definitely be the strength of the team with Nemanja Djurisic and Donte' Williams probably being the two best and most consistent players. Still have no legitimate option from the three-point line (2-11 in the game). Charles Mann was supposed to be a nice piece at the point guard spot, except he had more turnovers than assists. Forward Cameron Forte looks like he will be the best player off the bench with 9 points in 16 minutes, he can do a little bit of everything.

I think if this team can squeak out 6 conference wins or so that would be decent, not expecting a whole lot of anything though.

                              Iowa State 95, UNC-Wilmington 62

Playing without their best player, forward Melvin Ejim, the team still took care of business. Sophomore Naz Long hit 8-of-11 three's in his Cyclone debut and led the team in scoring with 26. All five starters were in double-digits, Georges Niang, the impressive freshmen from last season, was second on the team in points with 16. Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane is taking over the point guard spot, not a bad start with 7pts, 7ast, 11reb. Not exactly sure how well this team will be in comparison to last season's should-have-been Sweet 16 team. A lot will be determined once Ejim is back at 100%, but the non-conference slate is more impressive than usual so the 'Clones will have plenty of chances to impress.

                              Creighton 107, Alcorn State 61

                              McDermott: 20 Pts, 5 Reb (7-13, 2-3, 4-5)
                              Gibbs: 2 Pts, 5 Ast, 3 Stl, 2 Reb

                              Drake 61, IL-Chicago 59

                              Senior G Richard Carter: 38 Pts (12-17, 2-4, 12-12). Damn.

South Dakota State Jackrabbits start the season 0-2, but the senior duo from Rock Valley, IA (Jordan Dykstra and Marcus Heemstra) are both starting. Jackrabbits have 6 players averaging over 20 minutes per game, and all six average over 10 points a game. I guess they can't play any defense though.

Oh, and the Iowa Hawkeyes had to stage a second-half comeback to beat Nebraska-Omaha. Haha.
