In 1974, my family moved from the South Bronx to Uniondale, on Long Island. We were a stone's throw from the Nassau Coliseum, and my dad would take us there to see the then-ABA New York Nets, and their star player, Julius Erving, a.k.a., THE DOCTOR. Oh...my....goodness - my jaw dropped watching him operate on the court! He was to me what Michael Jordan was to you younger NBA fans. One of the saddest sports memories of my life was the day Roy Boe sold him to Philly - broke my heart and killed pro basketball on the Island. I was so happy when he finally won the title in 1983 with Moses - he had suffered playoff heartbreaks for years. I'm a diehard Knick fan, but I celebrated with Sixer fans that whole summer.
And I'll say this - the NBA never saw Doc's best.
