Get used to the words "in front of/behind Craig Steltz" He'll be Todd Johnson 2.0. Pretty much the guy who shows up JUST after or before the play but doesn't really do anything but get on the TV screen.

I really expect Marinelli to have a really big impact on our DL. He is one of the best DL coaches in football. It wouldn't surprise me to see Mark Anderson have a big season and Marcus Harrison to break out as well.

Interesting article on Chicagobears.com today about Earl Bennett and why he didn't see the field last year. Trouble digesting the playbook.

Pardon me? You didnt play him because he couldn't digest the playbook yet for the last two season you have been trotting Devin Hester out there week after week at WR?

Hell two years ago Moose was helping Hester LINEUP CORRECTLY on a consistant basis and calling timeouts when Hester didn't know where to go.

        Jesus Christ.

Can anyone tell me why chicago just picked up Glenn Earl, a saftey that hasn't played a snap due to injury in two seasons?

They are banking on hester because thats all they have. I cant stand it. Put him back as just a kick/punt returner and sign and draft some damn WR's. Quit being cheap mccasky/angelo.

Bc they felt bad that Benson fucked him up in the preseason two years ago.

True they haven't been cheap, but they have been operating under the notion that they don't need a big offensive weapon to be succesful, obviously they do

I think it has a lot to do as well with the inability to evaluate talent at a high level. For example I think they know they need a big offensive weapon, and they think Hester can be it.

                      They fail.

                        Some news from Chicago Bears.com

-The Bears open the season September 13th in Green Bay on Sunday Night.

-The Bears recieved 3 compensatory picks in the draft: the 99th overall(3rd Round), 246th(7th Round) and 251st(7th Round)

-Glen Earl has still not been officially signed by the team. So apparently those reports that came out saying he was were not true.

And Devin Hester says he welcomes the challenge of being a #1 WR.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Sitting atop the depth chart at wide receiver, Devin Hester knows that the Bears have high expectations for him this season—and that’s just fine with the electrifying playmaker.

“It is important for me to play like a No. 1 receiver,” Hester said. “That’s my biggest goal. I feel like I have the ability to play as a No. 1 receiver, and I’m feeling real good and confident.”

Hester performed well in last week’s minicamp at Halas Hall, exploding in and out of his breaks and catching virtually everything that Kyle Orton threw in his direction.

“Kyle is coming out here throwing great passes and organizing the receivers and putting them in the right spots,” Hester said. “That’s what it’s all about; being on the same page as the quarterback.”

Hester began to emerge during the second half of last season, catching 25 passes for 347 yards in the final six games after compiling 26 receptions for 318 yards in his first nine contests. His production improved after he gained a firmer grasp of the Bears offense.

“He’s just got to keep working,” said offensive coordinator Ron Turner. “He’s got to keep making the progress that he made at the end of last year. He wasn’t thinking; he was just going out and playing, and you could definitely see that, and he’s picked up [at minicamp] right where he left off.”

While some outsiders have questioned whether Hester is polished enough to play such a significant role on offense, Bears coaches are not among them.

“He definitely has No. 1 receiver-type ability,” Smith said. “At the end of the year, Devin was definitely playing like a No. 1 receiver, and I’m excited about this second year of him being a full-time wide receiver.”
**WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING?

“He’s going to make a huge step this year, which he did at the end of last year, just because he’ll know so much more,” Turner said. “Last year, every day it was learning something about playing the position. The only way you can learn is through experience; getting reps and seeing the different looks.

“Toward the end of the year last year, he started playing a lot faster. He’s picked up where he left off, so he’ll be fine, and he’ll be able to handle all that we can give him.”

Ex-Saint marches in: Practicing with his new teammates for the first time last week, recent free agent acquisition Josh Bullocks received a warm welcome.

“They’ve embraced me really good,” said the veteran free safety, who intercepted a pass in team drills last Thursday. “It’s a good team. Everybody on the team seems pretty cool. Everybody gets along and everybody’s on the same page. It’s like a family here; that’s what it feels like.”

As a member of the New Orleans Saints, Bullocks lost to the Bears in each of his first four NFL seasons from 2005-08, including the 2006 NFC Championship Game at Soldier Field.

“I’m surprised that nobody has said anything,” Bullocks said. “But this is the Chicago Bears. They’re not worried about the Saints, so that’s a good thing.”

Bolstering the line: Several experts are predicting that the Bears will select an offensive tackle with the 18th pick in the draft, which would be just fine as far as running back Matt Forte is concerned.

“I love offensive linemen,” Forte said. “That’s how I make my living. So the better offensive linemen and the more we can get, I’m all for that.”

New blood: Veteran cornerback Nate Vasher enjoyed working with new defensive assistants Rod Marinelli (defensive line) and Jon Hoke (defensive backs) during the minicamp.

“We have a group of veteran guys that know how to win, and we’re excited to see the new coaches in,” Vasher said. “They have some great ideas and great motivational tactics to let us just go out there and play, so we’re excited about that.”

Hester said that last year too, he needs to back it up now.

Yea the punts and no kickoff shit doesn't make sense. Hester in the NFL has always been better at kickoffs than he has punts....Put both him and Manning back there and go nuts.

Yep, another guy who can start at RT.

Feel bad for Beekman. Guy plays really well this year and the Bears basically sign guys that bump him out of his starting spot.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Wednesday bolstered their offensive line by agreeing to terms with free agent tackle Kevin Shaffer on a three-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Shaffer, who turned 29 earlier this month, is a seven-year veteran who started 47 of 48 games the past three seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The 6-5, 315-pounder signed with the Browns in 2006 as an unrestricted free agent after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

Shafer is expected to compete for the starting right tackle position in Chicago. His addition will give the Bears flexibility both in terms of where to play fellow free-agent acquisition Frank Omiyale as well as in the April 25-26 NFL draft.

The Bears had initially planned to have Omiyale compete at left guard, but they shifted him to right tackle on the second day of minicamp last week after veteran free agent John St. Clair bolted the team to sign with the Browns. In essence, the Bears traded St. Clair for Shaffer.

After starting at left tackle for Cleveland in 2006, Shaffer lined up at right tackle in 2007 and '08, missing only one game during that three-year span due to an injury. A salary cap casualty, he was cut by the Browns on March 12.

Shaffer was selected by the Falcons in the seventh round of the 2002 draft (244th overall) out of Tulsa.

He appeared in 53 games with 39 starts for Atlanta, with 31 of those starts coming in 2004 and '05 when the Falcons led the NFL in rushing. In a divisional playoff win over the St. Louis Rams on Jan. 15, 2005, Shaffer was part of a line that helped Atlanta set an NFL postseason rushing record with 327 yards.
That being said I'm really liking the way our offensive line is shaping up. Also what this does is if Williams somehow isn't able to deal with being the LT, it means we can have Omiyale play LT(as he did last year in Carolina for a game) and have Schaffer at RT.
