that was my reaction too, and didn't the raiders just trade burgess to the pats?

at least the raiders can't mess up their first round pick in 2011 since they don't own it

didn't expect it but the patriots front office has always been like 2 steps ahead of the game when they decide to move players

really the only one they got rid of like this and we shouldn't have would be Asante

Oh great a top 10 pick for New England. This bodes well for the rest of the league.

I've learned not to question Bill Belichick - the man always has his reasons & 9 times out of 10 he's right.

Strange move but they could probably afford to lose him. Atleast they got a 1st out of it, which evidently will prob be a top 5 draft pick... prob ends up looking like a great deal for New England.

Pryor/Jarvis can get it done. BB must like what he sees outta the younger guys. Plus with a 4-3 you don't need that stud DE. or maybe Julius is coming our way?

                        some solid analysis:

In a shocking move, the Patriots have traded five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour to the Raiders today, the team confirmed. The Patriots will receive a 2011 first-round draft choice, according to a source familiar with the trade.

Seymour, 29, has been an integral part of the Patriots’ three Super Bowl teams. He was entering the last year of his contract, and was due to make $3.685 million. That money now comes off the Patriots’ salary cap.

With several key players with contracts set to expire after the season, the Patriots must have felt that re-signing Seymour wasn’t likely, so they decided to get what they deemed fair value now.

In acquiring a first-round draft choice in 2011, the Patriots appear to have the NFL’s uncertain labor forecast in mind. That could be the first year with a rookie cap. The economics of top first-round draft choices currently make those choices undesirable, but with a cap, the value of those picks could skyrocket.

The flip side of the strategy, however, is that there is no guarantee of a rookie cap. Also, if owners and players can’t agree on a new collective bargaining agreement, there is no guarantee that there will be football in 2011. Furthermore, while the Raiders have struggled in recent years, there is no certainty the pick will be in the top half of the round.

The Patriots are deep along the defensive line, with starters Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork returning. Jarvis Green (8th year), Mike Wright (5th year), Ron Brace (second-round draft choice) and Myron Pryor (sixth-round draft choice) round out the depth chart.

Wilfork's contract is due to expire after this season. The Seymour trade could spark a resolution with his situation.

I think the Raiders not having a first round pick in 2011 is a good thing. But trading for seymour definitely seems like a short sighted move. The Raiders defense however, i think should end up top 10. I this will be the season the Raiders finally don't have double digit losses! (hopefully)

I don't think he is worth a 1st round pick but I really do think this could be a mid-1st round pick in 2011 so I'm not too upset about it.

The Raiders defense, despite what people seem to be saying and thinking, is not good. The Raiders are atrocious against the run and generate no pass rush whatsoever.

The linebackers are very weak against the run and the safeties are pretty much awful at everything. The Raiders defense is going to seriously struggle this year, again.

Seymour will help the DL. He tied his career high in sacks last season and he is one of the best DEnds in the league against the run.

That said, I really would have preferred Wilfork.

With Richard Seymour i think the Raiders will be better against the run. They were extremely awful last year against the run. With him hopefully we can be just a little worse.

The Raiders generate a very good pass rush though. They were 13th in the league in sacks last year despite having one of the leagues worst rush defenses and teams doing nothing but run on them all game.

The safeties are horrible but there is talent there. (Huff and Branch can run 4.3 fourties and Michael Mitchell also has good speed and can hit hard. Then Hiram Eugene played more and more as the season went on last year and played better.) The Safeties are still horrible but there is talent there.

The the linebackers are soft against the run but are very good against the pass.
