So 1 team in the past 25 years has lost the first game of the season and won the national title .. and? That probably has something to do with the team not being good enough to win the title. It's a lot easier to lose your first game and then get back into the discussion than it is to lose a game in the middle of the season like Oklahoma did last year, Florida a few years back, etc.
The reason why NCAA College Football is a joke

Real reason college football sucks is the preseason polls.Comment

I am not sure correlating one team winning a national championship game after losing their very first game in the last 25 years makes their rationale for crowning a championship flawed.
It is flawed, but that isn't the reason why.
Should Oklahoma go undefeated the rest of the way, win their conference...they'll play in the title game barring some other team having a more impressive resume. Now, if they win the championship game, there breaks your streak. If they lose the title game...uh...I guess we're at 26 years?
Makey no sense.Comment

... isn't the fact that a team has lost its first game and still won the national championship proof that it can happen?
Obviously, you are going to need some help and to be strong the rest of the season, but of course you are going to need that when you start out at a disadvantage.Comment

And I wouldn't exactly put a team like BYU in the same category as Portland State.Comment

Just my opinion but that is why I love college football so much. You cant let up against anyone, you have to get up for every opponent or your season is most likely done. None of that sitting your best players stuff when you have a playoff berth wrapped up.Comment

In the last 25 years, only one college football team has won a NCAA Div. 1 National Championship after losing their first game (University of Miami).

Though, that's not news to most folks. I never said college football sucks. This just further proves the point that the system is flawed. Lose the first game of the season = season over.
Div 1 of course. Div II has a playoff system.Originally posted by ChoditeI didn't throw out any analysis, just fact. Lost the first game of the season and your season is finished.

One loss does not kill your national title hopes...it just injures them severely. If BYU were to finish the year with one or two losses, Oklahoma finished with just that one loss (meaning they beat high-ranking schools like Texas and Okie St.), and no one else finished undefeated, the Sooners would most certainly be in talks for the national title. After all, they'd have quality wins under their belt, and their only loss would be a season opener against a solid ranked team.
So, to recap, a loss in week one doesn't hurt your chances any more than a loss in any other week...in fact, the BEST time to lose a game (if you have to lose) is in week one. People have short memories, and you have more time to climb back up the rankings.Comment
