As of September 16th 2009. This is my list of the 10 best Quarterbacks in the NFL.
This list is my opinion. Mine. The reasoning behind my list making logic is broken down into 3 factors. Skill, Stats, and "Would I want him on my team?" I'm one of the few people to realize that this is a team sport, and not a QB vs QB game, so my list may be different than other peoples.
Some of you will disagree with my list. Some may even laugh at it. Some of you may think that I know nothing about football after reading it.
But you're probably the same people who tried to tell me David Garrard and Eli Manning were elite Quarterbacks before last season.
Well... here goes nothing.
10) Matt Hasselbeck - Yeah... I said it. Matt Hasselbeck is in my eyes the 10th best Quarterback in the NFL. He has proved he could win in this league. He's a smart Quarterback who always goes through his reads, and Matt has always put up some good numbers even without ever having a true go to guy. Now Hasselbeck has an up and coming beast of a Tight End, and finally has a number one Wide Receiver in T.J. Houshmanzadeh. Expect Hasselbeck to re-emerge as one of the best in the business.
9) Aaron Rodgers - Rodgers played last season with a chip on his shoulder, and a broken record playing in his mind. "Can Aaron replace a legend?" Well that has yet to be seen. But what we did see is Rodgers shutting up his critics, and reassuring Green Bay, and their fans that they made the right decision in not only getting rid of Brett Favre, but also spending a First Round draft pick on him. Aaron showed mobility, good decision making, and great arm strength last season. Expect to see Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii this year if he keeps it up.
8) Ben Roethlisberger - Big Ben number 8? Are you crazy? He has 2 rings! Well, I'm a pretty big Ben fan myself, but I'm going to call it as I see it. You can't Question Roethlisberger's leadership, toughness, coolness under pressure, and ability to win big games. Not to mention Captain Pumpfake's ability to evade the sack, and make plays on the run as Ben is one of the best in the league at making something out of nothing. But with great pumpfake comes great responsibility, and even though holding on to the ball longer helps receivers get open. It's also Bens biggest problem as he tends to get sacked a lot. I also look at Ben as more of a game manager rather than a game breaker. When he's asked to pass a lot he doesn't tend t fare well, as he showed in his 2006 campaign when he passed more than ever and had a very dismal 18TDs and 23INTs.
7) Tony Romo - OVER BIG BEN!!!???? Unfortunately yes. Romo might be a choker in the playoffs, but you can't deny his talent. His quick release, his under rated arm strength. Great accuracy (65%) His ability to make plays with his feet. These are all things that make Romo a great Quarterback. Romo also has the highest career QB Rating of any current QB in the NFL. Hard to believe huh? If it wasn't for Romo being winless in the playoffs he'd be much higher on this list. Well that, and his sporadic times where he thinks he's Brett Favre and throws it into triple coverage.
6) Donovan McNabb - Donovan... Donovan... Donovan... You mix me up so bad. I don't know whether to put you 4th or to put you 7th. Sometimes you look so good, and sometimes you look like ass. One minute you're throwing razor sharp lasers down the field, and the next minute you are throwing balls into the dirt at people right in front of you. One thing is fore sure Donovan is a playmaker. He also hardly ever turns the ball over despite never having a number one receiver. (Except that one year he had T.O. and he went to the SB while McNabb broke a record for the only QB to ever throw 30+ TDs and less than 10 INTs while having a career best Completion Percentage). Donovan would be waaaaaay higher on my list if he wasn't one of the biggest chokers of all-time. Also you can really never trust his health.
5) Kurt Warner - I'm really not a big fan of Warner but I have to give credit where credit is due. If he actually can stay healthy this year and his old age doesn't catch up to him expect him to have great numbers again. When he has amazing Wide Outs Warner is one of the leagues best, and I think everyone can agree he is accurate, and knows how to win in the playoffs.
4) Drew Brees - Brees passed for 5,000 yards last season. He has a career QB Rating of 90. He is extremely accurate, and is a vocal leader of the New Orleans Saints. Brees might not have a great playoff record in NoLa, but he's also playing for a team that isn't worthy of making the playoffs. If they even sniff January Air it's all thanks to this man, so don't be so harsh on him.
3) Phillip Rivers - Rivers should have won the MVP last year. This guy is an animal. He's mentally and physically tough. He's a great leader. He's a gym rat. He's incredibly smart. He's FOOTBALL. He's what every coach wants out of their players. I just think it's incredibly unfortunate that LT, and the defense never shows up in the playoffs. This guy should have a ring before it's all said and done.
2) Tom Brady - 3 Rings. Countless records. Tough as nails in the pocket. The coolest guy in the world under pressure. Unrivaled pocket presence. Tom Brady never had the weapons Manning had until recently, and he all showed us what he could do with them. If Brady wins another Super Bowl I'll move him up to #1, but as good as Brady is, I'm letting Manning take it.
1) Peyton Manning - Peyton doesn't have as many Super Bowls as Tom Brady, but ever since this guy emerged into an elite Quarterback he has been nothing short of excellent. No one in the league has more raw talent than Peyton. Mix that with his consistency, smarts, precision, and decision making, and you have my #1 Quarterback in the NFL.
Well thats my countdown from 10 - 1. I'll do 20- 11 soon.
