Notice how he still somehow managed to tie race into the article
Guys play hard for Brett Favre. There's something about good-old boys from the South. They're natural leaders. Everybody loves them. Favre and Steve McNair were cut from the same cloth. They could connect with and inspire an opposite-race teammate just as effectively as a teammate who shared a similar background as theirsComment

Indeed, that is one of the main reasons I can't stand him. He's horrid on the radio also. Anytime I find he's subbing for Rome I pass on tuning in. That said I do that for a lot of Rome's subs.Comment

When I think of wasted picks, I think of guys like David Terrell, Curtis Enis, Tim Couch, etc. Never knew a QB who throws for 4000/28 in a season could be lumped in with those guys.Comment

Since that one good pick, Thompson has ignored free agency outside of Charles Woodson and ran the roster into the ground.Comment

LOL at Thompson "trying to send a message to Favre". I agree that Thompson has made some bonehead moves as GM, but there is no way that Thompson could have known beforehand that Rodgers would drop that far in the 1st round.Comment

Rodgers wasn't drafted to start immediately. He was going to be Favre's successor, which he became. If you recall, Rodgers dropped about 20 spots in the first round, and the Packers were able to grab a franchise QB at the end of the 1st round. I'd call that a damn good pick. Would you rather the Packers have selected Chris Spencer, Fabian Washington, or Matt Jones?

Thompson and McCarthy are through this year if the Packers don't make the playoffs and I don't think that is a shocking prediction.Comment

It takes 2-3 years to groom a guy. Now your banking on Brett not retiring until he's 38.Comment

If they don't make the playoffs both deserve to be gone. However I think its more likely TT fires MM to buy himself another year. MM would take the fall (which he would deserve) but TT would deserve to fall too.Comment

I stopped reading when I got to this spot in the article.
That's right. Halfway through the season Favre is the clear-cut MVP. It ain't even close. Right now Favre is sportsman of the year. That's not hyperbole.
Not even close? Guess this guy isn't aware of a QB in New Orleans tearing shit up right now.
I'm a huge Brees fan but let's be real here, that defense is the reason why the Saints are undefeated right now instead of .500 like they were at this point last season.
Favre and the Vikings are the complete opposite. The Vikings always had a strong defense along with a strong running game. Yet they only managed to stay above .500 by 2 or 3 games. Make no mistake about it, if Tavares Jackson was still QB for the Vikings they would be around .500 right now or even worse.
I'm not ragging on Rodgers. He is piling up insane stats so all is right with the world. The thing is that the author of that article makes a good point in that Rodgers was a wasted pick because QB was not an area of need 5 years ago in Green Bay. Thompson could have used some of those draft picks he spent over the past few years on the areas of need that the current team clearly has, as well as, spending some of the massive amount of $$ under the cap on some quality FA's to fill the gaps.
The Packers were just a couple of players away from strong Superbowl contention. There was no need to bust up the team just to rebuild with only guys that Thompson drafted.
Alex Smith
Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Jay Cutler
JaMarcus Russell
Brady Quinn
Matt Ryan*
Joe Flacco*
Matthew Stafford
Mark Sanchez
Josh Freeman
* Packers did not have a 1st round draft pick in 2008.
After looking at that list, how glad are you that the Packers took Rodgers in 05?Last edited by Tailback U; 11-07-2009, 11:23 AM.Comment

Knowing what we know today, Rodgers is better than most of those guys but Tom Brady nor Brett Favre were taken in the 1st round so you don't have to have a 1st round pick to find a franchise QB.Comment

Still not jumping with glee over it. Remember that Rodgers was gaining a reputation a glass jaw since he couldn't even get into game action for a single play without breaking his foot or tearing his hamstring. Of course he has put that behind him now but that is hindsight. A lot of Green Bay fans were ready to throw Rodgers on the scrap heap and take Brady Quinn a few years ago.

honestly if brett was so damn good why did we have 3 down years in a row and everyone was beginning to call for his head?
Minnesota has a complete team.. The Packers have a talented defense that gets shredded week in and week out and a busted offensive line.Last edited by JMeist; 11-07-2009, 09:47 PM.Comment
