They hired him because he has credibility since he played the position. He loses his credibility by making retarded reactionary comments. Usually the only time I even see him on TV is when I leave the channel on ESPN and he happens to come on (like after the MNF game). Now when I see him I'm more likely to change the channel instead of listening to him spew nonsense.
Same thing happened with Sean Salisbury on ESPN. When he was first hired, he was a normal person giving his opinion on NFL-related matters. Then after a couple months, he completely went off the deep end and started saying the most insane crap. They even created a regular feature where Sean Salisbury would yell at John Clayton. Its what ESPN wants. I am assuming that Ron Jaworksi has some clause in his contract which states that everyone else at ESPN must be dumber than him.

Dilfer says dumb things so that people like you will watch and then make a thread or blog about it on the internet.

If they all had the same top 5 QB lists then nobody would talk about it and they wouldn't get as much attention.

Same reason as to why Skip Bayless even has a job.
      That's exactly what it is.

Skip Bayless doesn't believe half the shit he says. He does it so people can watch and disagree with him. Half of these guys are fed what to say, they aren't original thoughts or anything.

You'd be surprised how many people watch crappy ESPN programming just to say "THAT GUY IS AN IDIOT!"

It's the reason Skip Bayless, Colin Cowherd and a number of ESPN talking heads still have their jobs. If they weren't drawing ratings, they wouldn't be there.

Exactly. How many segments do you have on ESPN, take the Cold Hard Facts, 1st and 10, whatever... where both guys agree? There's a reason they ALWAYS disagree about pretty much every topic.

I like the dudes like Skip Bayless though because that guy cleary never played any sports and is obviously just there to say obnoxious things.

It's different with guys like Merrill Hoge and Dilfer who say things, then reference their playing days as evidence as to why they know what they're talking about. Merrill Hoge will say something completely off the wall, then talk about how he learned it from Chuck Noll. And it's different with guys like John Clayton who are making predictions about who will/won't play in a game.

True, but I think the Salisbury/Clayton "douche-offs" were the gold standard. I honestly think that Salisbury wasn't even getting the audio of what Clayton was saying. Salisbury would stand there waiting, the director would point his finger at Salisbury when Clayton was done speaking, then Salisbury would yell "John Clayton! You can take your protractor, your pencil, and your Spongebob Squarepants outfit and shove it up your ass...BECAUSE YOU ARE WRONG!"

It wasn't really Salisbury playing "devil's advocate", because he never said anything about the topic at hand. He would just yell at Clayton for being wrong.

            Weird.

I really wish they would just have more shows breaking down film.

I remember Jaws used to have a segment where he did that, didn't he?

I think Inside the NFL on Showtime still has segments with film breakdown.

Yeah, that's true those segments did really start breaking down to the point where neither would even talk about the question at hand and just throw personal jabs at one another.

This is ridiculously true. The same can be said for Trev Alberts and Mark May. They start off, just giving opinions, with good rationale and backing up their point...but at some point ESPN said with these guys "be the most obnoxious dick face possible we want water cooler material here people...say the dumbest shit you can think of, who cares if you can back it up..."

Most recently, ESPN gave the go ahead for Mort and Adam Schefter to team up with Pro Football Weekly to deliver the most out of this world news, scoops, and "rumors" they can think of...I can't wait until they have Mort and Schefter argue about whose sources are better...maybe they'll dress Schefter up like he is straight from the Holy Land...even Lady Gaga thinks Adam Schefter looks too Jewish.

Sorry but ESPN could not give a shit about what goes on with random boards.

Trent Dilfer does not = ratings.

Dilfer can be a fool, period.

People on message boards hate everyone on TV.

Doesnt matter how good or bad or credible or awful they are EVERY guy on tv is hated.
Name any guy that is good and has a good reputation theres someone whos started a thread hating them.

Theres plenty of shows that break down games and film. NFLN has a number of shows that arent just the usual talking heads disagreeing with each other. I suggest you guys watch them if everything else is so intolerable.

For the record Schlereth , Dilfer , Clayton are all good. "Segments" are always scripted and pretty redundant. But when actual topics of the day are discussed Dilfer is good and Schlereth is really good. Dilfer still has the best segment/speech of the year with his rant on the NFL rules on hitting QBs.

This whole ESPN is d@ stupid and I cant watch analyst X got old in 2004. Move on, theres plenty of other programming.
