Thank you. It's not a white-white thing... it's the fact they are very similar in body type, skill set, running style, etc.
Toby Gerhart to enter the Draft

NAHSTE, you are wrong.
I watched a ton of Gerhart this year. I doubt you watched him much at all.
He is very much like Leonard. One cut, downhill runner. Doesn't have great feet, quickness, or speed. Good strength and balance and tough to bring down because he is a leg churner. Leonard had a good 40 time (4.49) but he's not that fast on the field. I bet Toby will run a 4.5 - 4.6.
But, as a former white FB, I love seeing my fellow people (no racist) get shine as a "Factor Back" (no Hoge). I watched a ton of Leonard's games in college, and in fact I did watch many of Gerhart's games last year.
While you list some similarities, that does not make them similar backs at all. Leonard was an athletic freak, and even in Cincinnati they use him for his receiving ability out of the backfield and his versatility. He's pretty much a 3rd down back/utility back in the NFL. Could you see Gerhart serving in a similar capacity?
Just because you throw out generic phrases to link them, like "downhill runners" (what good ballcarrier doesn't run down hill I ask?) does not make them similar. Also, what are you watching if you don't think either of these guys has good feet? Leonard was jumping over people, and Gerhart was making guys miss, hitting holes and breaking into the secondary quickly even vs OU's defense in the Sun Bowl.
You have to have quick feet to succeed as a D1 RB. Gerhart didn't just succeed, he excelled, and at some points even dominated. He may not have great top end speed, but he surely has quick feet. At least quick enough to succeed in college.
Whether or not he becomes a legit NFL RB, I don't know. But what I do know, is that no team will ask him to do the things Leonard does for Cincinnati, because that's just not who Toby is.
I'm surprised nobody has thrown out the Jacon Hester comparison yet. Figured that'd be a lock given the way this works.Last edited by NAHSTE; 01-17-2010, 12:54 PM.Comment

Real strong argument there. "I did this, I bet you didn't"

And Gerhart is an athletic freak as well. Again, just because he doesn't jump over and doesn't have good hands doesn't mean he isn't an athletic freak. Guy was a two-sport star at Stanford.

Gerhart's receiving stats, his best receiving season (2009): 157 yards.
This neglects to mention the fact that Leonard had a pair of 500+ yard receiving seasons. Leonard has that facet of the game down more then Gerhart, and it was one of the things that made him a good college player. Gerhart isn't a good receiver out of the backfield.
And this is all neglecting the fact that Gerhart had 2 1,000 yard seasons to Leonard's 0. Gerhart also averaged a full yard more per carry then Leonard and that Gerhart had more rushing touchdowns in 2009 then Leonard had rushing his whole career.
And Tailback U, Gerhart is quite good at making cuts and changing directions. Look at his TD run in the Cal game (the first one)
Comparing these two is unfair. Gerhart>>>>>>Leonard. I don't see much similarity other then color of skin
And like I said, I don't care about how many passes Leonard caught out of the backfield. I was comparing their running styles in between the tackles. And receiving stats have no bearing on their comparative running styles.
Are they identical? No. All I said was that Gerhart reminds me of Leonard because of their size/strength/speed skill set and style. I don't know why everyone soils their panties if you talk about how a white running back reminds you of another white running back.
What the fuck do you want me to say? Toby Gerhart reminds me of Chris Perry at Michigan?Last edited by Tailback U; 01-17-2010, 09:42 PM.Comment

I'm sorry, Timmy, but that video you posted of Gerhart doesn't show any change of direction at all. Not to mention, the hole is enormous. He just runs through it to daylight.
Brian Leonard was just as much of a beast as Gerhart at Rutgers. Don't know if you saw him, but he's actually more athletic than Gerhart. Quicker, more elusive, shiftier.
Gerhart is not elusive or shifty.
and LOL at Leonard not being able to do the same thing that Gerhart did on that 1st run in the vid you posted. Gerhart didn't do anything impressive in that run at all. The hole he ran through was enormous, he just hit it, slightly cutback and ran toward the open field. Good vision, but any D1 back can, and most likely has at some point, made that run.Last edited by Tailback U; 01-17-2010, 09:56 PM.Comment
