Good coaching/scheme allows the players to react faster. When you're running a complicated defensive scheme (as they did under Weis), you're making the players think before they react. Also, emphasizing fundamentals allows players to break blocks, take better pursuit angles, and make tackles among other things which allow players to make plays instead of looking lost/slow.
LOL at you implying that I blamed the cleats for ND not playing fast. I was only remarking on why ND players seem to slip so much on the field. For a few years now, Irish players have had problems slipping on the turf while other teams seem to have no problem keeping traction. While athleticism may play a part in these instances, cleats seem to be the common denominator.
