A Suggestion For Violent Hits In The NFL

Instead of just flat out fining and suspending players, why not set up a system like the technical fouls in the NBA or a card system like in soccer?

If the hit is a here and there, perhaps unintentional helmet-to-helmet hit, it should count as a technical/yellow card. Should it happen again, that's an ejection.

If the hit is a very violent, blatant head-to-head hit it should count as a double technical/red card and immediate injection.

If the NFL wants to add fines to that, they can. After a certain amount of technicals, it should count as a game suspension.

I think that this makes a lot more sense than what I've hear about proposing four game suspensions. I mean, if the NFL is actually going to take action on it, this is the only method that makes some sense to me. Anyone else got any ideas? Thoughts?

So, interpretation fouls. Doubt that shit will happen, in the NFL. But I wish it would.

it's a violent game and when you have finely tuned athelets running at full speed into each other people are gonna get hurt. this shit always happens when a few big hits go down. 10 years ago these hits would have just been highlights but now it is all about 'oh my god! we need to stop these horrible hits before someone gets hurt!!!' Deacon Jones is sick to his stomach...

Senior year is a bitch. I'd devote the time, but then thesis work and internships get in the way.

While that's valid steeljake, the need for safety as well as the game itself is evolving. With the media framing injuries the way they are and the stress of safety, this was going to happen. With the blessing of technology, we're also realizing the effects of these collisions, especially with brain damage becoming a serious issue. When you see the effects that these hits have on players it become a lot more difficult to just ignore or frame as "Well, in the old day..."

just suspend games. i think it was rodney harrison who said he racked up like 200k in big hit fines, but it was only when a suspension came into play that he was scared enough to stop

I think on-site immediate lethal injection for a blatant head-to-head is a little overboard.

I think it should depend on the situation.

If a runningback is slowed down, nearly stopped and being held up by a player or 2 and somebody runs and hits helmet to helmet then they should be punished somehow.

If a WR is running a In or Slant route freely at full speed and the safety hits them in the helmet it's a completely different story.

the problem is that you have to judge intent. did the p;ayer intentionally lead with the helemt and aim for the head? if so, that is bush league shit and get them the fuck out. both of james harrison's hits and dunta's hit on jackson were not intentional IMO. James' hit on Cribbs was him having his head down, which is bad technique not bad intentions.

The real soultion is teaching kids coming up to keep their heads up and lead with the shoulder and body. But I still don't want to hear this pussy bullshit about a violent game. This is like saying boxing needs better rules cuz Evander Holyfield is 2 steps away from being a vegetable.

Wait, are we discussing on-field repercussion? Or post-game fines/suspensions?

You have to change the way players learn the fundamentals of the game. It's not gonna happen. Steeljake is right. Football is what it is. Getting hit so hard you have to retire and/or have headaches the rest of your life is the chance you take.
