Packers will release Al Harris Monday

    Per JSOnline:

Green Bay -- Cornerback Al Harris won't play for the Green Bay Packers this season.

Harris told ESPN 540 in Milwaukee that the Packers were going to release him on Monday.

Attempts to reach Harris all day Sunday were unsuccessful, but doubts about whether the Packers thought he had enough left to activate him from the physically unable to perform list popped up when the club didn't active him for the third consecutive week.

Harris began practicing three weeks ago Monday, and the deadline for making a decision on his future is Monday. The Packers' options are to activate him, release him or put him on injured reserve.

Harris was coming back from a catastrophic knee injury he suffered against San Francisco a year ago. He spent all off-season working feverishly to get his knee back in shape, but at 35 years old the odds were against him.

The Packers appear set at the nickel position with rookie Sam Shields, who had his first career interception, but also was beaten for a touchdown and several other completions. Behind Shields, the Packers have Pat Lee, who missed the Dallas game with an ankle injury, and Brandon Underwood, who has been playing only special teams.

Safety Atari Bigby, who was activated from PUP on Saturday, said Harris worked hard to get back on the field but that it was out of his control as to whether the Packers would want him back. Harris essentially was in a three-week tryout, but was not deemed good enough to warrant playing time by the Packers.

It wouldn't make sense for Green Bay to put him on injured reserve and have to pay his salary. His best bet is to try to hook on with another team. No one will pick him up on waivers because his $2 million-plus salary is too high. More than likely, he will have to hook on with another team at a near minimum salary.
What a sad way for his career to end in Green Bay.

For all that he has done for the Green Bay Packers, the right thing to do would be to activate him to the 53 man roster and be a backup CB for the rest of the season or put him on injured reserve and let him retire as a Packer since the cap is not an issue. This is Ted Thompson we are talking about though.

Or....If he still wants to play, then allow him to hook up with another team. The wrong thing would be to IR him and basically end his career.

If they release him, he'll end up on the Vikings like everybody else the Packers cut.

why would he go to a team that is in disarray and has no shot of doing anything this year im sure at least one of the playoff teams would sign him to a minimum deal to shore up on depth

It's really just been Al thinking this. It's not been said one way or the other by TT or Mike.

I mean can they honestly say that a guy like Anthony Smith or Brandon Underwood would be more valuable to this team than Al Harris? The move to release him would make no sense to me.

                              Packers Release CB Harris

The Green Bay Packers have released CB Al Harris. The transaction was announced Monday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Harris, who was acquired by Green Bay from Philadelphia in a trade in 2003, started all 102 games he played in for the Packers over seven seasons (2003-09). He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008 and earned second-team All-Pro honors from The Associated Press in 2007. Harris set the Packers’ single-season record for passes defensed (tracked since 1982) with 28 in 2004, and he posted 14 interceptions and 108 passes defensed during his time in Green Bay.

“We want to thank Al for his contributions to the Green Bay Packers,” Thompson said. “His hard work, dedication and professionalism have been the keys to his success. During his time here, he has been a valuable member of our organization and our community. We wish him the very best in the future and he will always be a part of the Packer family.”
                              From Twitter-

@JuddZulgad CB Al Harris told Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he thinks an NFC North team will go after him but added, "I probably can't say who."
I think everybody knows he will be a Viking by tomorrow morning.
