Mike Golic "takes dump" on Football Outsiders this morning

Listening to Mike & Mike on the way in to work this morning, Greenberg was hyping up a rare "Football Outsiders" reference, saying that a piece on Football Outsiders that lists myths and facts for the NFC and AFC will be surprising to Golic.

Greenberg has Golic guess if a statement if "myth" or "fact"...the first statement is "The Cowboys are unlucky to be 1-7". Football Outsiders says its a fact because the Cowboys are 0-5 in games decided by a TD or less, and thats unlucky. Golic is in disbelief, saying the Cowboys defense is bad, they're starting a backup QB, and luck has very little to do with it. He questions the 'logic' of Football Outsiders thinking that even if the Cowboys won a couple close games, that wouldn't make them a good team. Next statement..."the Bucs are the best team in the NFC". Golic is again in disbelief, saying that of course the Bucs aren't the best team in the NFC, and that no one in their right mind would be thinking the Bucs are the best team in the NFC. How is this even a question of being myth or fact?

Greenberg: And when we return from the break, we'll go through the AFC myths or facts!

    Golic: Oh.

Mike and Mike are insufferable, but I suppose Football Outsiders is way worse.

I actually like listening to Mike and Mike. Greenberg gets on my nerves alot though. I think Tony Siragusa deserves his own radio show.

                Neither are very good.

Football Outsiders basically attempts to be a Baseball Prospectus of Football but they have pretty mediocre writers and stat guys. It's pretty blah all around.

"Sabermetrics" can not be applied to football. Football Outsiders suck.

It should be a worldwide crusade. I can't even go to that site for more than 10 minutes without getting angy.

I will say this...unlike some of the baseball geeks, who FO clearly emulate, I think these guys actually watch games.

                        I completely agree.

I'm not entirely sold yet that they can be applied in basketball either.

But unlike football, everything in baseball is quantifiable. Football Outsiders is just stupid, and only exists to give credence to shitty arguments like "Vincent Jackson is better than Randy Moss."

Absolutely, plus baseball at it's core is 1v1 so it's extremely easy to break down quantifiable stuff.

Football and for the most part basketball are completely team sports, so it's really hard to get statistical stuff outside of "this team is better when Player A is on the court/field over Player B". There are some okay ones in basketball, PER is alright, +/- is okay, Usage % can show you some stuff but it's not nearly on the same level as baseball.

Football I think is nearly impossible to get any sort of "higher-level" statistical grasp on.

                              Lefty hates you.

I think one of (perhaps the)the worst "en vogue" stats in basketball right now is Per36 minutes. This stat makes no sense to me. It essentially punishes anyone who plays more than 36MPG and is basically a useless stat to make Reggie Evans or someother player feel better that if they were actually good enough or on the floor enough to play 36MPG they might actually put up those stats.

The fact that Per36 allows Yinka Dare to average nearly a career double double is alone enough IMO to allow this stat to go to hell.

                              I wonder what Carlos Zambrano's K/6innings is..?
