Yay or Nay for Rooney Rule?

Even if a team knows who they want there is a time with SF and every team looking for a new coach when they go through the evaluation process....that is the time the RR is supposed to kick in. The RR is based on ideals.....the ideal that teams bring in mutiple candidates...and hire someone; however, we all know that doesn't always happen, so the rule obviously has its flaws. However, its important to remember the RR has less to do with the teams and more to do with creating more opportunity for minority candidates.
so the evaluation process should tell them that they need to look at a minority? cmon...you are reaching.
its not like the 49ers are ruling out minorities, they are ruling our anyone whose name isnt harbaugh. If they know he is the guy they want, then their is no evaluation process that will change that
and the rule is racist because its called minority, but its really about black coaches. how many asian or hispanic coaches are there in the NFL? How many white coaches were passed over because Dan Rooney knew in advance that he was going to hire a black man? sure he interviewed them, but at the end of the day he knew dam well he was hiring a black coachComment

The rule is for minority coaches....it really doesn't matter how many of each group there are....the dominant minority group is blacks, but that has little to do with anything. A minority is a minority whether you are black, asian, hispanic, etc
Dan Rooney didn't hire Tomlin because of the RR. He brought in Ron Rivera to meet the RR requirements. Rooney heard about Tomlin and wanted to interview him and Rooney felt he was best for the job. Given Tomlin's success it appears to be that Rooney made the correct decision.
"Mike Tomlin was not a part of the Rooney Rule," said Rooney, who chaired the NFL committee that instituted the rule in 2003. "We had already interviewed Ron Rivera. That fulfilled the obligation. But we heard about Mike and we called him in and we talked to him. He was very impressive. So we brought him back. I talked to him on the phone often. He just showed that he was going to be a terrific coach, which is coming to bear."Comment

racists obviously isnt the correct term, but its the one people associate with in this discussion. i think the rule is more a hypocrisy than anything. its supposed to be to benefit minorities, but its really just about black coaches. it also penalizes teams who can not satisfy the rooney rule because they already know who they want as their coach.
having to consider a person because of their race is ridiculous. Minorities are not being interviewed because they are qualified, they are being interviewed because of their skin color. Dont you see whats wrong with that?
look at the browns. They are going to interview perry fuel (is that his last name) to satisfy the RR. Why? do they have any intention of hiring the man? no...they are interviewing him because of the color of his skin.....thats whats wrong with the rooney ruleComment

It is a double edge sword because the rule has been turned into a mockery by teams. At the same time, it does give guys opportunities to get their foot in the door that they may not have without the rule.
Ideally, there would be a happy minimum but it's almost impossible to force GMs/Owners to interview certain coaches without mandating it.
If it's mandated, there will always be people trying to get around it.

u guys bring up another point abut the minority guys getting their foot in the door.
on one hand a coach can get recognized during the interview process and maybe get themselves out there. On the other hand its like they are whoring themselves out by knowing participating in an interview when they know they have no chance at a job
empire called it a mockery by teams and thats true. in theory its a good rule, but in reality its notComment
