Browns Name Pat Shurmur New Head Coach

CLEVELAND (AP)—St. Louis offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is Cleveland’s new coach.

The Browns hired Shurmur on Thursday, ending a search that began when Eric Mangini was fired on Jan. 3. Shurmur was the first candidate interviewed by Browns president Mike Holmgren. Shurmur is the Browns’ fifth coach since their expansion return in 1999.

Chris Palmer, Butch Davis, Romeo Crennel and Mangini each failed in trying to build a consistent winner in Cleveland. Now, it’s Shurmur’s turn. The 45-year-old, who has no head coaching experience, will take over a team that has made just one playoff appearance in 13 years.

Mangini was fired after his second 5-11 season.

is this really a good hire for the Browns? I figured Holmgren would bring in a more experienced head coach. I guess time will tell.

Any relation to Fritz Shurmur, who was at one time, DC of GB?

Could this be a connection of familiarity?

and thats the connection. the idiots in the media here seem to think he was hired in part because of that. probably true....but now they are questioning holmgrens ability to hire the right people. Shermer hasnt done shit and why would they give him a chance to coach the team?

i dont get this one at all. i understand if gruden doesnt want to coach yet. But u could have gotten someone with experience thats better than the 32 and 26th ranked offenses the past 2 years

it dont matter though. if they dont have players then the team will never get better. i wonder what happens to Rob Ryan

With all of the speculation about Holmgren coming back to coaching and him allegedly not wanting to right now you'd think he would have brought someone in with more experience and juice. It seems Holmgren doesn't want to bring in someone with more of an ego than him.

                    Uncle actually.

Shurmur has WCO experience which Holmgren was really after. I think it's kind of a "meh" coaching move.. but I felt that same way about the Falcons hiring Mike Smith and Ravens hiring John Harbaugh.

The real funny thing about the Browns coaching search though.. is they are looking at this guy to be defensive coordinator

idk if the local media is just retarded or if they may actually have a point.

1st thing they say is shurmur is part of LaMonte group...not the holmgren tree....thats Bob LaMonte the agent for shurmur, holmgren, heckert and someone else in the browns front office.

2nd thing they say is its possible holmgren hired shurmur because he would basically be holmgrens bitch...meaning holmgren can coach thru him without putting in 15 hour days

are these guys just retards or what? just so you know the people on the local radio saying this are kenny rhoda (bigtime steelers fan) lecharles bentley...played HS here and was a center for the aints until his career ending injury with the browns. and jarrod cherry....some ex football player who i dont know anything about

personally i dont know why we fired mangini. holmgren wanted a holmgren guy and should have just fired eric last year. eric had no chance as coach with the talent on this team. he made huge improvements over last year despite the record and still got shit canned for some guy nobody ever heard of until this week. nobody else interviewed this guy and holmgren said he was going to take his time and interview candidates and do his due diligence. he interviewed 3 people...shurmur being the first

While it's true that Shurmur has the same agent as Holmgren, and it's also true that Shurmur never worked for Holmgren, I think the hire has more to do with the extended Holmgren tree, because Shurmur worked for Andy Reid for a decade.

Holmgren wanted a WCO guy, and I also suspect he wanted a younger coach who wouldnt challenge his overall power.

And if I recall, Je'rod Cherry was a backup defensive back with the Saints and Pats.
