Bears 2011 projected starting defense: grades

    DE - Julius Peppers - A
Godsend for a team lacking pass rush and talent.

    DE - Izzy Idonije - C+
Is a nice enough player, but playing opposite Peppers he should be more dominant. I think the Bears could really be dangerous if they had a set of bookend DEs who could pass rush.

    DT - Stephen Paea - C+
Probably a solid pick, but I don't expect anything notable from Paea. Just staying healthy would be good, considering the Bears lack of options at DT.

    DT - Matt Toeaina/Harry Melton - D
Should probably be an F, but giving some room for potential. But playing alongside unproven Paea could be a disaster for these two mediocrities.

    OLB - Lance Briggs - A-
A very good player who is getting up there in years. Probably has 2-3 productive seasons left.

    MLB - Brian Urlacher - A-
I think this will be the last hurrah for Urlacher. Hopefully stays healthy.

    OLB - Nick Roach - D-
Another instance in which I hope the Bears have an alternative plan. Was a flop at MLB. Not a complete liability at OLB, but not good, either.

    CB - Charles Tillman - B-
Was expected to switch to S, but a lack of quality CBs made him stay at home. Can be beaten in coverage, but had a pretty good showing last year all things considered.

    CB - Tim Jennings - D-
Started the year by making big plays against GB. Ended the year by getting burnt to a crisp against GB. Inbetween he gradually became one of the worst starting CBs in the NFL. If the Bears go another year with Jennings, then you know its rebuilding time.

    SS - Major Wright - C
Made big plays in the preseason, made bad plays in the regular season. Perhaps a year's experience and full health will make Wright a decent starter.

    FS - Chris Harris - C-
A player on the downside, the Bears are hoping to coax one more season out of a guy who has already lost a step and a half.

    P - Brad Maynard - D
Quietly had a terrible year in 2010.

Im really hoping we look at some DT options in FA.. whoever that may be, because thats gonna be a rough spot for us to say the least. Im a big Izzy fan, I think he will continue to impress next season. Tim Jennings is deserving of nothing less then an F.. he was straight bum status.

I have a feeling that the Bears end up signing Barry Cofield.

Henry Melton is a fucking RB, why any NFL team ever looked at him at DE is a mystery to me. Hopefully Wotton shows some progression this season, doubt it tho with lack of an offseason. I feel like D.J. Moore could be a factor at cb if he wasn't so damn tiny. He played solid as a nickle last year tho.

He played his last two seasons at Texas at DE and he was WAY better there than he was at HB.

Dude had no idea how to use his power and leverage on offense.

That would be tremendous, but I doubt it.

Not like there's a ton of those guys just floatin around waiting for a job lol. Their management does suck, but they pulled peppers out of their ass last season, im interested to see what they follow that up with this year.

The Bears had all kinds of DL depth a few years ago.

                  What happened?

20th in the league in pass defense. I'm just happy there are 12 teams worse than us.

Brown and Wale got old and let go, and Tommie Harris never been the same since he got hurt.

Injuries, FA, Bad GM'ing, Tank is retarded.

Tommie got hurt, the whole thing was built around him. Dusty got hurt too. Tank was second best but he did everything possible to get kicked out of Chicago. Alex Brown (above average) Ian Scott (average at best) Alphonso Boone (below average) all left in FA. Then JA got rid of Garay who had the season of his life in SD.

They dont care about yards, you should know that by now RushGod!

I still think they need more on offense than they do defense. The D always just finds a way. Its not like they were lit up by GB in week 17 and the NFC title game. But no matter what im still tapering my expectations.

We could have told you what you had in Tim Jennings.

That poor guy, dude's career is going to be remembered in posters of him getting left.
