Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said he still is adjusting to his new role with the defense, but overall, he felt good about his showing Sunday against the Saints.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall recorded three tackles and a sack in Sunday’s win over the Saints. (Associated Press/Carolyn Kaster)

After playing almost exclusively on the outside during the first eight seasons of his career, Hall has been asked to log extensive playing time at nickelback this season, matching up with slot receivers, and also play some safety.

Hall did well Sunday in coverage at his new spot, saw some time on kick coverage and recorded a sack on New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees after blitzing from the slot. Hall’s final stat line read: three tackles, two tackles for a loss and a sack.

“I felt good,” Hall said. “Coaches said it was the best game I’ve had as a Redskin. I don’t know if that’s how I felt. But it was a good game. I felt like I knew what was going on, felt like we kind of confused them a little bit.”

Said defensive coordinator Jim Halsett: “He did a good job in all the areas we asked him to.”

For Hall, the sack marked the first complete sack of his career. He previously had recorded a half-sack twice (once in 2008 and once in 2004).
“It was nice,” Hall said of the sack. “I see why some of them D-linemen and linebackers get so hyped some times. It was an adrenaline rush. It was pretty nice.”

Hall’s assignments weren’t targeted by Brees during the game, so Hall didn’t have any opportunities for an interception, which he said was a bit unsettling. Hall said he’ll have to develop patience as he tries to find other ways to make plays. But he believes those opportunities will come eventually.

“It was a little tough to get balls,” Hall said. “I told [secondary coach Raheem Morris], ‘I’m ready to go back on the outside, man. I didn’t get no balls.’ A couple of them little jump balls [fellow cornerback] Josh [Wilson] got, I wanted one of those things. But, it’s cool. Some weeks I’m going to get action, some games I’m not. I definitely like being a little closer to the ball. It’s a work in progress. I’m still trying to tweak it and make it my own little thing.”

Hopefully this will help the Redskins get more out of Hall. Griffen did a great job in the opener, and if he and Wilson stay healthy, the defensive staff can continue this game plan.

RGIII is the real deal for sure.....
i am glad he played with heart and smarts.
he did what he needed to do today.
            But
NOT his fault Morgan was an complete idiot and did some little kid tantrum; putting the team in a VERY tough spot/call on 4th & 16.
not to mention all he to do was run straight toward the 1st down marker instead trying to put all those moves that could have given him the 1st down.
3rd & 14, inside your own 15, up 6, 3:20min left to go = call a PA Pass and Cancel. *its Legit, so no needless complaining

Cut Morgan, re-sign Cooley. Paul isn't ready to be a tight end. Banks needs more time at receiver if he's ever going to figure out what he's doing. Cooley is great a blocking and would provide a nice safety valve for RG3.

                The Good

Alfred Morris proving to be legit. 89 yards on 16 carries for 5.6 average. Morris did a great job rushing the ball and keeping the attack balanced, though they should have leaned on him more in the fourth to get some yardage.

RGIII got the Redskins in position to tie the game with no timeouts in just his second NFL game. He threw a couple beautiful deep balls and was very efficient today, only mistake really being that one interception. He also scored two rushing TDs with 82 yards on the ground, taking advantage of some good rushing lanes.

The defense as a whole was extremely underwhelming, but I did like the Redskins taking advantage of turnovers and getting three of them, scoring on one and an interception in the end zone to prevent a TD.

Leonard Hankerson's 68 yard reception was great, but the Redskins only threw two more passes his way the rest of the day. Why they didn't utilize him more on deeper routes after that catch is beyond me.

                The Bad

Why did the Redskins even try the FG at the end? Cundiff has only made six kicks over 50 yards in his career, with a long of 56, and with the way RGIII played today, I would have put that game in his hands. I also didn't like that it seemed our plays were to get that field goal, not go for the win. RGIII did not struggle at all today, there was no reason to not let him take control and try and win the game.

Danny Smith's blocking teams need some serious adjustments. Five blocked field goals last season, and already two blocked punts this year. His reputation kept him on through last season, so he better fix things on he is risking unemployment.

Losing Adam Carriker really hurt the defense. Carriker is strong against the run, and with him in the game, that relegates Bowen to playing few rushing downs and coming in during passing downs (his strength) and allows Golston and Jenkins to rotate and keep everyone fresh. Bowen had to play much more, as did everyone else, and that trickled down throughout the game.

Jim Haslett just got out coached. He made no adjustments to stop Amendola in the first half, and continued to let the Rams drive in the second half, and both Jackson and Richardson carved up the run defense. Yes, losing Carriker was huge but the lack of adjustments buried the Redskins today.

Josh Morgan should be released, or at the very least earn his way up the depth chart. No excuse for that play, even with emotions running high due. You just have to be aware of the game situations and keep your cool. The same goes for the rest of the team.

And for both sides, the officiating was terrible, and that trickled down into both sides going at each other and causing more penalties.

Redskins could have won this game, but it was a trap game we all knew was coming based off how the Rams always play up to the Redskins. Redskins have some work to do for our home opener against the Bengals next Sunday.

Early injury updates: Adam Carriker expected to have knee surgery, however, no one is throwing out ACL yet so I'll take that as a good sign. Orakpo is going to see Dr James Andrews who did the surgery for his pectoral injury following Week 17, and it seems that injury was re-aggravated. Not a good sign, as that is a potential season-ender if it's torn all the way. Josh Wilson suffered a concussion and we all know how that can go.

Haslett got out-coached, simple as that. They kept running zones for some reason, and Amendola kept finding the blind spots.

i noticed that too but i guess he wanted to take the chances of keeping all passes underneath as opposed to going M2M and letting Bradford go up top often.........

was a good game plan but just camp up short in the end.

RGIII did his job and very well.......he living up to his style of play.

                        dumb Josh Morgan tho

                            Yep. Doneskis.

So who plays in his place? Rob Jackson is ... well, not very good. Do we move the rookie Robinson outside? Maybe Zo? Is Markus White still on the roster?

Looks like Jackson and Chris Wilson will be competing for time. My guess is that they use a rotation, with Jackson playing in rushing situations and Wilson coming in to rush the passer. Alexander could get some time, but I think they will try those two right now. Markus White is on the Bucs practice squad, so they could pick back up and add him to the roster.

You've got to give Orakpo credit for trying to come back twice in that game, though. Very tough player.

As for DE, looks like Jenkins will get the start, and Doug Worthington activated from the practice squad. Jenkins will be solid, but this really hurts the rotation and now Bowen will play more rushing downs than he should.

Haslett has some serious work to do, as the defense stunk it up and now he's lost two arguable top five defensive players.
