    WTF is a "safety basket"?

No. I've heard of a security blanket (no diivox) and safety net, but never a safety basket. Take the phrase literally - if Eli Manning fell, would a basket break his fall?

How big a basket we talking?

To me it seems like Eli only won because no one else really stood out from the crowd. I thought it about who else on the Giants could have won it but no one came to mind. JPP was dominant early but sort of faded, Nicks had nice numbers but didn't seem too dominant. So them giving it to Eli makes sense.

Well I was thinking it was going to either go to Tuck or Eli. Tuck was kinda owed one for the last super bowl.

At this point, the only questions is how soon does he get in?

Also because the QB of the winning team has won the SB MVP 25 of 46 times. I still need to do more research to verify this theory, but I'm starting to suspect that a quarterback receiving a disproportional amount of credit for a Super Bowl win has been ingrained in our culture for a really long time. Still compiling the data though, I'll update with my findings.

                            You forgot about Jim Plunkett....

                            Edit:

Oh, I see you prefaced it by saying MVP's.....poor Plunkett only had one SB MVP, but 2 SB wins. Imagine if he had two MVP's though? Would he be in...a different player?
