Sources: Garrard current favorite to start for Miami, Tannehill "not in the running"

    loltannehill.

It's just July, but the pre-training-camp rumor mill is churning. And nothing's more spicy than a quarterback battle (or even a potential quarterback battle), so that makes the Dolphins a pretty interesting team right now.

And according to reports, it's David Garrard that's the clubhouse leader for Miami, with Ryan Tannehill "not in the running" to start at the moment.

Garrard's got a leg up on Tannehill and incumbent starter Matt Moore, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, and has started to "emerge as the favorite to be the starting quarterback in Miami." Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post adds some fuel to that fire, noting it's "hard to argue" with Garrard as the leader, but also reporting that Tannehill is "not in the running" to start at the moment.

Biggane cites Tannehill's "untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic" as the primary problem for the rookie, especially since "Joe Philbin and his staff have made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated."

This actually jives with what Tannehill told CBSSports.com's Bryan Fischer recently, on the heels of reports he was "ahead" of the other guys based on his playbook knowledge.

"I wouldn't say I'm ahead, they're professionals and they put the time in," Tannehill said. "It definitely takes a little off my plate as far as having to learn a whole new playbook. I did know the majority of it coming in and yes there's some adjustments and things we've changed on some plays. It definitely helped minimize the amount of learning on paper that I had to do and allow me to focus on getting better and working on the timing and the details of plays."

If Tannehill's already knocked out of the competition, or at least far removed from the leaders, "Hard Knocks" could lose some serious drama, unless you're truly compelled by the Garrard vs. Moore battle. (You shouldn't be.)

But it is still just July. Moore's not out of the running, Garrard's not locked in to start and it's too early to write off Tannehill completely. Beside, if Garrard and Moore are in a battle for the starting position in Miami, it's pretty unlikely that you'll see the Dolphins come out and scorch the Earth on their schedule.

Which makes it much more likely that at some point in the 2012 season, you'll see the Dolphins give the rookie a shot to play.

Tannehill is extremely raw, and I can't see him starting at all this season, and would go a step further that he doesn't step on the field at all unless both Garrard and Moore are hurt. He may not even start in 2013.

Yeah guys, nothing says "turnovers will not be tolerated" like drafting Ryan fucking Tannehill in the first round.

Seems logical if Tannehill isn't ready, although if he's not going to be ready until 2014, why draft him?

Because the meddling Stephen Ross wants a franchise quarterback and he wanted one this year!

Seriously, he isn't the future of that franchise, but, Ross can't be patient and wait till there is a viable one available to him. You would think that a guy with so much money, and a great business acumen, would have more fucking patience and understand that the things you want take time. Investing in a bad asset, just to say you have said asset, is so counterproductive.

Same reason they drafted Chad Henne.

Good, this isn't a sprint for once, it's a marathon. Him starting or not, is Miami a Super Bowl contender either way? No. So how about we try to indoctrinate him/teach him for a year or two instead of throw him in the fire? Tannehill isn't a Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck, he shows potential but is not ready to be a starter from day one and carry the team's future. Remember how many here said Cam Newton wasn't either?

You guys kill me with the "he's a bust" shit already, when the guy hasn't even gotten a preseason game under his belt, let alone a season or two.

Says the Tampa Bay fan. Who's owners is also one of the most hated and despised soccer club owner in the world (who is now ALSO going to sell shares of his legendary, iconic English football club to Americans!!). Glad you already know he's a bad asset throughout his career, Lord knows the Bucs are stacked with great 1st round draft picks over the last few years.

Tampa Bay fan??? I was a fan, and season-ticket holder, for many years - then they fired Jon Gruden and hired that fucking Judas Raheem. I haven't supported that organization since that day in January 2009.

LOL @ attacking his team's owner as retaliation...as if any of this denies the validity of what he said about Stephen Ross.

Bullshit. A lifelong fan just can't shut it off like a water fountain. No matter how much I'm tired of Miami's crap I know I just couldn't stop or switch to another team. Not to mention, I still see you post nothing but Bucs news when it happens.

Ross has his faults, but in no way do I find his post accurate. He talks shit about him meddling and being impatient, yet he has tried all he can to get high value players/coaches. Now they draft Tannehill, the 3rd best rated QB prospect in the draft, let alone only one there to pick of the top 3, and are going to have him sit and learn.....but Ross is still impatient? Also, who said waiting another year or two guarantees us some other higher prospect or free agent??? At some point Miami had to shit or get off the pot with picking a QB in the first round and go with him. This is the first time since Marino retired.......and since Marino was drafted #1 in 1982!!! And I am sure any expert will agree Tannehill has a better looking future coming in to the NFL then Henne did.

Why don't you go talk to BigBucs about how often I post about the Bucs and our past verbal wars. We've since had a case-fire and he has taken over as the #1 Bucs fan on this site. If I ever post about the Bucs it is simply because it is news and I have an opinion on it. For the last three seasons, I have supported no team.

I think the problem is that many thought Tannehill was a serious reach, and with the amount of QBs coming out next year, that Miami should have waited next year. It isn't like they are just a QB away from competing, any other pick instead of Tannehill could get on the field immediately this year and get some experience. Tannehill is a project

disagree, if we didn't take him, he would have been picked within the next 2-3 picks anyway by someone in the spot or trading up. As for who we should have picked, who does everyone think it should have been then? Another OL or DL like the last 5yrs (aside from V.Davis)? Trade down again to collect an extra pick so we can draft a POS like Pat White or Patrick Turner later on in the 2nd or 3rd? Our DL has so many players from drafts and FA that we didn't resign Kendall Langford and traded Merling. There were no high impact OLB at the spot that can play all downs if I recall. Even if you find a stud there at OL/DL, it does nothing to advance the franchise there like a potential QB does, thus why the pick was fine for Miami. They've drafted the other way for 5 years and it hasn't done shit. We have the best LT in football, what the fuck has that gotten us? So if this doesn't pan out, what have we really lost but one pick?? Bill Parcells is a major factor in this clusterfuck, and slinked away like a little douche, it's why I laugh when I continue to see him touted on TV.

I'm fine with the pick, and if he doesn't turn out, oh well. But to sit and call him a bust, not going to cut it, etc. right now is ridiculous fan talking bullshit. If he's done nothing by Feb 2015 I'll be the first to say he was a bust or bad pick.

This team has many pressing needs and QB wasnt one of them, because Matt Moore had a very solid season. Stephen Ross is just a meddling schmuck who wanted a big name and failed miserably at landing a coach.
