    Week 1 NFL Thoughts.....

    * Im really close to falling in love with KCs backfield. Hillis may be a flash in the pan , but he covers the ball better than in the past and still runs with authority. He should be a perfect complement to Charles who pre-injury had the fastest first step of any back in the league.
My hesitance comes from KCs inability to use them properly. This is a top 1-3 running attack and a wealth of total yardage if the right plays are called and blocked.

    * KC/ATL went to the 3rd quarter before the first punt IIRC. My buddy text me another game went to the 2 min warning.
NFL Rule changes are making Punters even more useless and obsolete. Do they even need to show up to practice ?

    * Speaking of NFL rule changes Luck and RG3 are graced. This isnt Peyton Manning and Vick there rookie years. But Shanahans fantastic playcalls and gameplan and Indys leftover pass system is going to help these guys look like stars.
RG3s playbook reminds me of Cunninghams when he was in Philly. Way more decisive than when Vick came in and his progressions are alot simpler. He will be protected but as film gathers his athleticism will be put to the test.
Luck needs a strong head. That offenses lack of talent may result in a number of ugly INTs and unnecessary hits.

*Matt Forte is a joy to watch. He may never lead the league in rushing but youll never know hes not that elite back watching him play. Hes as good as anyone in open space or in a crowd. Hes a nightmare coming out of the backfield. Im “ok” with Bush getting goal line carries. But anywhere else on the field LOL at putting Bush in. Doesnt make any sense to me. Ill assume theyre terrified of injury to Forte again. Between Chi/KC they really need to learn the value of top tier RBs and use em. N.E adjusted and centered there pass around TEs. No reason an imaginative use of RBs cant be come up with.

*Is anyone else creeped out by the Geico Orakpo caveman commercials ? Its shot in some weird Low Def Handy Cam quality. And its just yucky and awkward.

    *Refs.....keep em.
Yes its week 1 yes I should wait a month or so but I like them. I see less holding and P.I calls which usually means the refs are “letting guys play”.Nothing objective here but I feel game continuity esepcially late in the game was better in week1 than it was in any week in december.

    * Im going to have a weekly over/under on how many time an announcer says the phrase " This is a QB driven league now"

*Cam Newton and Steve Smith performed amazingly. I never thought two guys lining up by themselves would do so well against the vaunted 85 Bears defense. Imagine how good Carolinas offense will be with 9 other players.

    CAR YDS Avg
    K. Pilares 1 5 5.0
    C. Newton 5 4 0.8
    M. Tolbert 1 2 2.0
    D. Williams 6 -1 -0.2
    Team 13 10 0.8

    *Sanchez and the Jets.
Lets not break out the annointing oils but Sanchez proves again that for all his media fragility this kid can handle pressure games. The media was armed and ready to tear him and this team apart and he goes out and puts on a solid performance. Too bad they cant face an unprepared Bills team every week.

    *Cowboys
That Oline held and got away with it on ALOT of plays. This should worry every Cowboys fan.
*You can hype Romos performance etc but fact of the matter is the difference is and was Demarco Murray. Romos stupid late game decisions should be masked by his ability to keep down and distance out of obvious Romo plays. That Oline and Murray will decide the Cowboys record this year above all else.

P.S I realize Im a bit premature since theres two games on tonight. But I refuse to bend to the NFLs will of putting on 18 nationally televised games opening week.
Best reason to have a license.

You are absolutely right about the Cowboys Oline getting away with murder that game. Our defensive line was getting held the entire game. Hey, they got away with it. I guess we are the dumb ones for not doing it right back to them.

I've never really understood the whole Geico/caveman advertising campaign. Of the 25 - 30 commercials they've had over the years, I've only laughed at one, and even that commercial wasn't all that funny. I don't get why they keep rolling those out every year.

My favorite part about that Geico commercial is that he has to tell everyone who Orakpo is, because 99.99% of the world would have no clue otherwise.

Week 1 comments from games I was able to see:

*The reason Tony Romo gets a bad rep is the same reason he's labeled great at times. First and 30, needing a field goal to put the game away, and you throw a jump ball up to Austin and hope he comes down with it? Just a bone headed play that worked in his favor this time. I love Romo and his talents, and if he eliminated dumb mistakes I'd say he would be a top six QB in this league.

*Frank Gore continues to show why I always struggle at fantasy. I always hear about running backs falling apart as they get older and I always think they will fall apart, and then I watch Gore play one of the best games I've seen in quite some time. Really, an awesome performance by an awesome player.

*Don't like what I saw out of the Titans at all. Was quick to say they could take over the south this year, but I don't think that is the case anymore, even against an elite Patriots team. That line looks horrible.

*I'm tired of watching all these QB's having Brett Favre syndrome and getting rewarded for it. I saw a lot of QB's make boneheaded mistakes throughout the first three quarters this week, only to pile on garbage time stats at the end. This week, the four were Stafford/Brees/Rodgers/Vick. Two of the three lost the games, other two barely beat shit teams, but if you look at the stat chart you'll see all four had over 300 yards and will probably be praised for their efforts leading the teams back. Brees and Rodgers each threw a pick down by 7 (Rodgers almost 2), but I'm willing to give Rodgers slack as he was facing the Niners. Was much more impressed with RGIII and Matt Ryan leading the team the whole way without making mistakes.

*Still curious if Peyton can throw the deep ball. I think he attempted (1) last night? Until I see him make a deep throw to the sideline I'm going to question how far the Broncos can go. If he shows that ability, the Broncos will be in it until the end.

*Is it just me or is Oakland/AFC West always on Monday nights at 10 now for week 1? Last I checked the NFC has West coast teams as well.

Steve Smith is my fav WR in the league.

Guy is just out there to win games and make sure the other team knows it.

not much love RGIII from many........
a little praise here and there from media and VSN
                but
the truth is that he looked and played like The BEST QB in all of NFL yesterday....good game plan or not.
he did what needed to be done which was play smart, loose, confident and tough.
not to mention; they played against at a solid team.

                next;
Cam and Smith....that was amazing to watch a 2 on 11

like you said....if and when the other 9 players on Offense wake up; other teams will have hell to pay.
hopefully not Week 9 at FedEx!!!!
3rd & 14, inside your own 15, up 6, 3:20min left to go = call a PA Pass and Cancel. *its Legit, so no needless complaining

No no we didn't have to hear about RG3 having a better performance then everyone basically and being compared to Newton last year about 3 thousand times during the day yestarday. How could we miss it?

KOF, I do want to point out that this isn't Vick and Manning's NFL during their first season. Last year proved with Newton and Dalton that rookie QBs can start in the NFL and do well, putting up good stats in both cases but also Dalton got the Bengals to the playoffs, and no one say that coming with that team.

So I am cautiously optimistic as a Redskins fan, because we have a very good team of players surrounding RGIII, including a damn good defense.

Agreed. Vick was very limited but with him you saw his raw athleticism just take over. With Manning it was really surprising game management and huddle control that stood out. Luck and RG3 dont really have to excel to that extreme to be successful or set themselves apart. The transition to NFL QB is very very easy if you were even midly prepared.Theres still alot of busts but Im sure even Jim Drunkenmiller could look good for some stretches.

Skins have vet WRs and young guys every where else on Offense. They can be successful but on paper theyd have to be overachievers. Defense they have alot to prove after last year. Having a QB that can give you a lead can make a big difference though.
