i think the rule should exsist for WR who run out of bounds on their own....they should not be allowed to touch the ball if they run out on their own.
but under no circumstances should a defensive player be allowed to push a WR out of bounds...and why is it that a WR can reestablish himself...except with the QB goes out of the pocket? that part is just stupidComment

Reminds me of the Calvin Johnson catch vs the bears a couple years ago.

Because when the QB leaves the pocket, while he has not crossed the line of scrimmage, there is a reasonable expectation that he may run with the football and in doing so, his WRs may block for him. As a defender, he has a right to pursue the ball carrier and can push someone out of his way. That is why the rule exists. However stupid, and ridiculous, it may be - it's still a rule and it is just as bad as the tuck rule, leaping, etc.Comment

It was the right call.
Because Freeman escaped from the pocket, the defender can shove the WR before the pass and there is no illegal contact. Once the WR is out of bounds, he can't touch the ball first, regardless if he reestablishes position.
Had Freeman thrown from the pocket, it would have been illegal contact by the Saints defender, so the catch would have been legal IF the TB WR reestablished himself (which he did). In that case, TB would have declined the penalty, TD.
Blame the rule, not the ref. Just another confusing, convoluted, overly complicated NFL rule.Comment

The only thing more annoying than the convoluted NFL Rulebook are the announcers who don't understand the rules, yet will offer their incorrect opinions.
I enjoyed watching Josh Freeman stand at the line of scrimmage and let the clock run down from 1:00 to 0:35 before snapping the ball. That was a total badass move...like Larry Bird not wanting a second remaining on the clock after he hits the game-winning shot.Comment

Ok, so the refs got one call wrong. What game don't the refs get at least one call wrong? Regardless, this one is pretty grey area, not so cut and dry.
Your fault for blowing a 14pt lead. Your fault for being behind 7 on the final play.
Your dick. Eat it.Comment
