Interesting sidenote, the Steelers won the AFC Championship in 1995 because Kordell Stewart caught a pass in the endzone. Why does this matter? He was pushed out of bounds and came back in and they never called it. I think that's why Jim Harbaugh is a rage-o-haulic to this day.

Was there an outbreak of WR's running out of bounds into the sidelines ,sneaking behind coaches ,and camera men then coming out of nowhere in the endzone to catch a pass in the 60s for this rule to be there ?
I believe NFL has similar rules for the gunners on returns but theres also provisions that acknowledge an effort must be made to get back in bounds.
I recall back in 92-93 special teams demon Kenny Gant for the Cowboys upending a redskin on a punt return..the ball was fumbled but recovered , the crowd went nuts as it looked like some super play by Gant....on the TV replay you see several opposing coaches and players getting bumped and knocked around as Gant basically sprinted for 25 yards out of bounds then finally ran back in bounds to make the hit... Highly entertaining.Best reason to have a license.

I'd have to see the play again but when I saw it initially I could've sworn the receiver was out of bounds TWICE. Early in his route he ran out of the far side of the endzone (on his own), then he crossed in the back of the endzone and was pushed out by a defender but subsequently re-established himslef and caught the ball.
