Owners could expand playoffs to 14-16 teams

If you like (or don't like) Roger Goodell's ambition to increase the regular-season schedule to 18 games, you're really going to love (or hate) the owners' next big idea -- playoff expansion.

That's what Goodell discussed Wednesday with the media at the owners' meetings in Dallas.

"Right now we're with 12 teams obviously. We'll look at probably 14 or 16 teams," Goodell said, via NFL.com.

So, um, half the league would make the postseason, then? Yeah, that sounds like kind of a brutal idea, right?

Apparently the owners have discussed it before, but didn't implement anything. That inability to move the idea forward could very well happen again once the competition committee discusses it (we assume) in the spring.

But although some might believe an expanded postseason would water down the playoff teams, it also might be tough to convince the owners of perennially mediocre teams (cough, cough, San Diego) that their squads would have a chance to earn additional money by making more franchises eligible for the playoffs.

    Isn't that right, Philip Rivers?

Teams with losing records shouldn't get in the playoffs period (it was bad enough the Seahawks made it in 7-9...even if they did upset the Saints).

That's all I want to see is my Lions with a 5-11 record making the playoffs.

This shit would just cheapen the season and take away from the "every game counts" allure. Might as well go full on 82 games like the NBA.

I think I am with the consensus here that there's not enough mid-level talent in the NFL to make this good for integrity. At the moment the 6 slots really forces the just above average teams to play balls to the wall to get in and that's a good thing; once you take it to six it becomes too easy for a so-so team to waltz in early and a really disjointed and not so great to watch team to sneak in late. I would rather see more regular season games than more teams in the playoffs although I don't think there's much issue with the current schedule length. As much as I do miss the NFL when it's not on part of that is to do with the fleeting nature of NFL Sundays.

I like the current format but expanding wouldn't be awful. I mean if you look at the AFC the next two teams that would get in would be bengals and Jets(I know the Jets are pathetic) and the NFC would have Vikings, Cowboys and redskins fighting for the last two spots.

So there wouldn't be anymore byes and every team will have to play the first week of the playoffs.

                      As it stands now

                      (8) Jets at (1) Texans
                      (7) Bengals at (2) patriots
                      (6) steelers at (3) broncos
                      (5) colts at (4) ravens

                      (8) Cowboys at (1) Falcons
                      (7) Redskins at (2) 49ers
                      (6) bears at (3) packers
                      (5) Seahawks at (4) giants

There's some decent matchups there and only 1 team is currently below .500, it's 4 more games that I wouldn't mind seeing even if the jets weren't in it. That's assuming this is the layout they wanna go.
I do understand why you guys don't like it though it will take some excitement away towards the end of the season.
