Madden retires after 30 years in booth

John Madden, a fixture in NFL broadcast booths for 30 years, has decided to retire, he announced Thursday in a statement released by NBC Sports.

Madden, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and former Super bowl-winning coach of the Oakland Raiders, has been a game analyst and TV personality since walking away from coaching in 1979.

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall," Madden said. "I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not."

"It's been such a great ride," he added. The NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion – it still is. ... it's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision.

"I still love every part of it -- the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people... but I know this is the right time."

I'll miss the big lug calling games, not the brett favre bjs anymore but still.

People said this was coming when he missed a game last year in Seattle I think and didnt want to travel. Collinsworth did the game instead. I just didnt think it would be this fast.

I've always been one of those guys who has defended Madden to a point. Yeah he says stupid shit but ripping on him has almost become vogue and people do it now just for shits. Honestly, the guy has forgotten more about football than 99% of people will ever know and sadly IMO he was forced to become and stay a caricature to make money and keep his job/ratings etc.

Get him off camera and I bet he would be an absolutley fasinating guy to talk to and pick his brain about things.

"From the time he hits the court, he plays at a competitive level that you rarely see," Popovich says. "He does the exact same things that Kobe (Bryant) does, that Michael Jordan did.

Al Michaels calling NFL games w/o Madden will suck.

NFL w/o Madden is just odd.

I'm another who absolutely loves the guy. When he's on, there's no one even close. When he's off, he'll still crack you up with some of the lunacy that comes flying out of his pie-hole. I'm gonna miss him.

Why the fuck is he retiring in the first place? He's gonna be at home watching the games and commenting on them anyway, might as well do it in the booth.....

Nothing personal about Chris, it's just the way he talks. He always pauses between words and chuckles for no reason, I hated listening to him in 09.
