Fighting is necessary in hockey because it prevents 3rd and 4th liners from harassing 1st liners. That's the bottom line.

It's not about keeping star players safe or how dangerous the game is. Every hockey player knows that if you start getting a little chippy with a guy like Joe Thornton you are going to have to answer to a guy like Jody Shelley.

Fighting keeps the role players from fucking with the star players - mentally and physically. Fighting does not so much keep role players from going after a star player with the intentions of hurting them, but rather keeps the pests from getting too obnoxiously close to the star players and on their nerves.

and hockey is not more physical than football because, among other things, football contains the aspect of passing. the aspect of passing the football in the air over the course of 50 yards makes the hits all that much more violent. hockey players are not threatened by as many blind side hits or guys leaving their feet at full on sprints in order to launch their bodies into another human being as hard as they possibly can.

that's why NFL teams play 16 games a season and NHL teams play 82.

that's why NFL teams play 1 game a week and NHL teams play 3 or 4.

hockey is very physical and demanding, but it is not nearly as hard on the body or as violent as football.

what most non hockey fans don't seem to realize is that these "goon" players were probably quality scorers at the junior level...sometimes it just doesn't pan out but if you can fill another role to get yourself a job...why not.

it's just illogical to think that you can have goal scorers on every line. non-hockey fans don't understand the importance of having checkers, grinders, and enforcers/pests on every team.

exactly. I personally think chemistry is more important in hockey than any other sport. You can't put 3 guys that want to be 50 goal scorers on the same line and even sniff success.

Agreed, a prime example of that is the New Jersey Devils in the 90s. Guys like Scott Stevens and Claude Lemieux were essential to those Stanley Cup teams but they weren't goal scorers.
