Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will reportedly host next season's Winter Classic with the New York Rangers as the likely opponent.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the annual outdoor contest will take place at Citizens Bank Park -- home of baseball's Philadelphia Phillies.
A league source told the paper that a contract has yet to be signed and an actual date has not yet been determined.
The Winter Classic has been played on New Year's Day, but that falls on a Sunday in 2012 and the NFL -- provided there is no extended labor strife -- is scheduled to play that day. The Philadelphia Eagles are slated to host a game that day against the Washington Redskins at nearby Lincoln Financial Field.
In an effort to avoid direct competition with the NFL, the NHL will likely play its signature game on either Monday, January 2 or New Year's Eve.
It would mark the second Winter Classic for the Flyers, who took on the Bruins in the 2010 contest at historic Fenway Park in Boston.
