Report: Flyers vs Rangers 2012 Winter Classic

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will reportedly host next season's Winter Classic with the New York Rangers as the likely opponent.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the annual outdoor contest will take place at Citizens Bank Park -- home of baseball's Philadelphia Phillies.

A league source told the paper that a contract has yet to be signed and an actual date has not yet been determined.

The Winter Classic has been played on New Year's Day, but that falls on a Sunday in 2012 and the NFL -- provided there is no extended labor strife -- is scheduled to play that day. The Philadelphia Eagles are slated to host a game that day against the Washington Redskins at nearby Lincoln Financial Field.

In an effort to avoid direct competition with the NFL, the NHL will likely play its signature game on either Monday, January 2 or New Year's Eve.

It would mark the second Winter Classic for the Flyers, who took on the Bruins in the 2010 contest at historic Fenway Park in Boston.

The ice was horrible because of the constant rain leading up to the classic. There were puddles and shit all over the ice.

Who gives a fuck if the ice is horrible, it's cool as anything throwback hockey. I'm sure the players and most of the Canadian fans have happily played in worse conditions in their youth.

You know what... I'll agree with you.

I'm a big Flyers fan and I love seeing them in the game, but I feel like they should give some other teams a chance to play.

^^this man speaks the truth. Backyard rink, you keep playing till the ice is so soft you break right down...then you just play in shoes for another week and call it a season.
All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.

            "rammer" and "cummings"

The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.

I can understand the reason to have an east time because of the time slot, and well because of location. Most west teams can't have it due to being also too south. But why can't the Rangers host the game and have like LA, San Jose, Dallas, etc come up and play. I think it would be interesting and a nice little story having the cali teams come up from the warmth to the cold. (even though majority of those teams are canadian anyway).

Or at least bring in like Tampa Bay or something. No reason a team should be playing twice in a couple years.

They should just announce the 2013 game as well. Pittsburgh vs ????

Why are you complaining about Atlantic teams playing in this? Canadian teams have their own winter classic. The hEritage

And the heritage classice is the one game people want to see east teams. Toronto vs Montreal could sell out the Rose Bowl for a best of 7 series.

I'd love to see the Kings play in a winter classic. Too bad there's no ice in LA.

It's pretty simple why the west teams don't get in.

Till their viewership ratings are high enough in their own area they'll stick with east teams.

                        Leafs offseason training!

I'm just hoping that HBO does another 24/7, none of my teams have ever been featured in those types of shows haha.
