Lorenzo Fertitta and best friend Glenn Carano (Gina Carano's father) were both NSAC commissioners till around 2000/2001 & both were advocates and supporters of MMA, who wanted the sport sanctioned in Vegas. Then at the 11th hour the night before voting on sanctioning the sport & the UFC in Vegas, the both of them mysteriously decided to suddenly reverse their positions and vote no. They both resigned a few days later & within a month bought the UFC, then had it sanctioned by the NSAC (with no votes against it) a matter of weeks later. Many of the people who served on the commission or with the commission at that time now work for the UFC.
This was actually one of a number of issues that the FTC investigated the UFC for (re- Section 7 of the Clayton Act & Section 5 of the FTC Act), a couple of times over the last 10 years. After their last investigation of the UFC ended in early 2012, the FTC advised them that they have an "open case" ongoing, but weren't bringing any charges at that point in time. Nothing has happened, since.
