The NHL is about shooting a puck into a net.
Fighting in hockey is in no way essential to the health of the league. The only reason the league allows it is it's the only reason casual sports fans care. The NHLPA also doesn't want to sacrifice jobs of a segment of their guys.
I'm not saying anything will happen by the league barring a catastrophe, it is what it is...

Essential to the health of the league? It's part of the fucking game. Listen to what Janssen fucking says. It's about setting the tone, flipping momentum, energizing your team, etc, etc, etc.
They do it for the exact same reasons we've outlined time and time again, yet you clowns wanna keep trolling like we're making it up.
All you non hockey watchers who just see punches without any sort of understanding sit here and think it's violence without reason. When anyone who's taken the time to learn an oz about the sport knows it's more than that.Comment

Physical intimidation is why my team, San Jose, fucking blows in the postseason. So perhaps I'm on the wrong side of the fence?
Physical players are what keeps things in check on the ice. If you run a player, you're going to have to answer for it. You take away the ability to physically retaliate, and it's going to be more dangerous. The only retaliation, physically, it's going to be more high flying hits, perhaps into boards, which is the most dangerous part of hockey...and where all the concussions are currently coming from.
Take away fighting, concussions will rise. I guarantee it.
Do we really want hockey players given the right to take anyone out without any fear of retaliation? I sure as fuck don't. That'll be way more dangerous.Comment

This explains it all to me. Around the Horn and PTI talked about the Rangers/Devils, and of course, it was with a bunch of guys who know little to nothing about hockey. Hell the only time anything gets into PTI about hockey is either this stuff, or when it is one of their "Happy trails" things. You don't see them talking about the big game between Team A and Team B like they do every night for every other sport.
What did TSN have, well on Off The Record, they had Rob Ray & Lyndon Byers, two tough guys, two fighters, talking about how this was needed, and why this happened, and how the Rangers couldn't just allow the Devils to put out their 4th line in their building on a night where they could clinch a playoff spot.
Now as has been the case in every thread, it is the typical PTI guys coming in and telling the hockey people how it should be.
And since we want to bring up football

Why is that type of block allowed? That could do huge amounts of damage, and it is way over the top in terms of what is actually needed. The guy didn't need to be laid the fuck out. I'm sure that is not how they learned to block, and one could even say, that isn't a block at all. And don't give me this "it is needed to win because he is stopping a guy from getting to the guy with the ball" shit, because that could have easily been done if the guy just got in front of him. Didn't need to be laid out.All you need to know when thinking of the NHL vs Madden series is the two people involved in making the games.
"rammer" and "cummings"
The NHL series is a giver, Madden takes the load.Comment

Nobody is saying that, but you're taking the toughness out of the sport that's very intricate to the game.

lol @ that silly argument. MMA is a mix of different combat sports including boxing, muay thai and Kickboxing.

Also FT, Stanley Cup isn't necessary for winning games, get rid of it.Comment

Obviously, a combat sport is fighting.

Recycled argument is morally weak. You have absolutely no basis whatsoever to even consider banning fighting in hockey whilst taking an interest in MMA. It's blatant hypocrisy.Comment
