NJPW Ryogoku (10/8 on UStream PPV) - FREE LINK INSIDE!
This is unreal. This is like the first day in weeks that I actually have to get up early, and they are showing this entire show for free. I'm sure it will be sorted out by the morning and they'll want $25 for the VOD. I'm dozing already and Harry Smith isn't helping.
njpw1972 We'll start the PPV broadcasting in 5 minutes.
First four matches ended up free. All four were pretty good, although you can tell they held back a bit with a couple of flat finishes. "Davey Boy Smith Jr" as he is now billed show more charisma than i've ever seen him show. His tag team with Lance Archer impressed me.
Low Ki vs Kota Ibushi was good, not great. Told a story.
Alex Shelley/KUSHIDA vs Rocky Romero/Alex Kozlov was fun.
6-man opener I cant comment because I didn't see enough of it. What I saw was fine. Typical NJPW 6-man.
Show did 57,000 buys in Japan, and 600 additional buys internationally. Both numbers are considered a success, especially the 600 since thats pretty much in line with a lot of U.S. iPPV and this show aired at 4am eastern.
Attendance was 9000.
I watched the first half and from what I saw I can recommend buying in the future. They aired the entire first half free until the purchasing issues were ironed out, with frequent updates as to what was going on. Could have been a disaster but New Japan hit it out of the park customer service wise. Great job.
Words can't describe what a game changer this iPPV already is for puro fans, and it's only going to get bigger and better when other companies copy New Japan.
Meltzer says the Tanahashi/Suzuki main event is one of the best matches he's ever seen in his life, and better than any of the Flair/Steamboat matches.
Warner...where would Tanahashi be on your current active "favorite" wrestlers?
This guy has grown on me leaps and bounds over the past 2 years. Easily one of my favorites right now. The guy delivers at a rate higher than probably anyone else going.
Can't remember the last time I didn't like a Tanahashi match.
Tanahashi is the Wrestler of the Year, its over, a vote for anybody else would be like not voting Mike Trout rookie of the year. He is having a legendary year, like Flair 89, Joe 05, KENTA 09, you name it. He is probably the best wrestler in the world right now by a sizable margin.
I like him a lot, but he's not my favorite, because no one can match the awesomeness of Rocky Romero right now.
Tanahashi/Suzuki was not one of the best matches i've ever seen in my life, but it was brilliantly worked and one of the best matches of the year for sure. It blew away the match these two had in January at the Dome show.
Suzuki controlled early, working over Tanahashi's injured elbow. Just totally beat him down, killing the hope spots and working the arm.
Tanahashi eventually hits a dragon screw and works over the knee. He fights to lock in a figure four, and Suzuki struggles to get out of it for what felt like forever. Seriously, this felt like the longest figure four spot ever. He manages to get to the rope to break, setting up one of the best spots i've seen in a long time. Tanahashi whips him into the ropes, and Suzuki stops dead in his tracks and starts limping from the figure four damage. Out of nowhere, Suzuki turns around and nails a dropkick. He was bluffing. Just awesome.
Later, Tanahashi goes for another dragon screw and it somehow gets reversed into a rear naked. Another great spot.
Tanahashi fights out of two Gotch piledriver attempts, and eventually hits two High Fly Flows for the win. Just a brilliant match.
Anderson vs Okada delivered, with a hot finishing sequence. Same for Goto/Nakamura.
Definite show of the year contender. Awesome from top to bottom.
