As reported by Keith Pompey and OwlScoop.com($), Temple has landed a verbal committment from Archbishop Wood safety Nate Smith.
The 5-11, 176-pound safety was originally set to go to West Virginia but decommitted when defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel left his post to coach with former Mountaineer boss Rich Rodriguez at Arizona.
Temple was originally thought to be the runner-up for his services when he first verballed to West Virginia in October. He also received scholarship offers from the likes of Michigan State and South Carolina.
Smith, a three-star prospect, is considered the 21st best safety in the country according to Rivals. He is the second recruit in the span of a week that Temple has pried away from the Virginias as the Owls landed the services of 6-4, 213-pound Romond Deloatch last weekend after his visit with Virginia Tech didn’t prove to be rewarding.
With the addition of Smith, the talk of “Temple’s greatest recruiting class ever” may have some weight behind it. As it stands right now, the Owls have five three-star recruits set to join the program and a slew of highly-regarded two-star prospects that may have been passed over by the big boys for one reason or another.
Games aren’t won on paper but Steve Addazio, Matt Rhule and the rest of Temple’s coaching staff is certainly infusing the program with a caliber of talent that has never been seen before on North Broad Street.

The Daily News is reporting that former Penn State quarterback Kevin Newsome is transferring to Temple. The former four star recruit will have two years of eligibility remaining and can play immediately due to the fact that he sat out last season.
The competition between Newsome and the incumbent Chris Coyer should be very, very interesting. Don’t forget about JUCO wildcard Clinton “Juice” Granger, either.
