Thought on today's game...

-Jay Bruce is a new player. Dropped 15 pounds, being more selective at the plate, and he took a low breaking ball into the seats. Last year, that's a K. I wonder how long it will take opposing teams to catch up with that and change the scouting report.

-Dusty left Arroyo out to dry. Ondrusek should have been getting ready at the start of the 7th. By the time Arroyo was in deep trouble, it was too late. Should have been gone after the first base runner, but Ondrusek wasnt ready.

-Dusty made up for it by letting Chapman go two innings. w00t.

-Ryan Hanigan has the best bat control on the team (98% of the time he swings at a strike he gets contact, I think the best in baseball in 2011), and always gives you a good AB. These are the things in baseball you can not measure. Stubbs on first, one out in the 9th, Hanigan was the perfect guy to have up. I called it in the chat box, you just knew he would poke one behind the runner, and he did, setting up the game winner.

-Bray needs to be ready to go fro the Cards, because Chapman is probably unavailable for two days. At least one for sure.

-I hope Miguel Cairo plays forever. Useful guy, underrated player.

Joey Votto's 10-year, $225MM extension with the Reds is "one of the crazier seeming contracts in baseball history," writes Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman talks to several anonymous team executives about the contract, with theories ranging from the Reds being worried about the Dodgers' aggressive new ownership to the Reds being able to afford Votto thanks to several years of collecting luxury tax payments. Then again, one competing GM says simply, "The Reds look like they have no plan."

I went and dug this up from earlier in the week, because now it appears that the bolded is true according to reports.

The Reds funded Joey Votto's big contract extension with the $25MM per year they've received in revenue sharing over the past 10 years, writes Bill Madden of the New York Daily News. We've heard whispers previously that the Reds had drawn upon shared revenues to lock up Votto, though this seems to be the first mention of such a specific sum.

The Reds stockpiled 10 years worth of revenue sharing for a rainy day. That rainy day ended up funding the Votto deal. Bob Castellini made the call, and Walt pulled the trigger. This is why the Reds are still in position to re-sign Phillips. The Votto money came directly from funds that most owners put in their pockets and do not reinvest in the team.

This is why I say that these small market owners are just cheap. These m'fers have the money. They choose to pocket it. That's their right, but it annoys me when they let players walk, claim poverty, and fans buy it (looking at you, Milwaukee owners)

As for the competing GM who says "The Reds look like they have no plan", let me enlighten him. The "plan" is to keep the best LH hitter in the NL and a potential future HOF player and team icon in a Reds uniform for his entire career. It's refreshing, and it's fucking awesome for the fans. Great job by ownership pulling this off, while all the while continuing to raise payroll and stay committed to winning. Impossible not to love this.

I think this is the point where Dusty has to realize Arroyo is a 5/6 innings pitcher now as opposed to what he was a few years ago.

I saw him in person and I'm amazed he ever makes contact. He moves his front foot so much on the stride that his head is all over the place. No wonder he strikes out so often.

Decidedly not a fan, but then again it's not his fault that Fredi G. is playing him over Heyward.

Lots of chatter already that the Padres will look to unload Edinson Volquez at the deadline for a prospect package, and they are hoping he bounces back to some degree so they can at least get real prospect(s). He makes less than $2.5M, so he would be an attractive target for any team still in the hunt.

Nice cheap shot at Milwaukee in a team thread.

Your point is extremely misled. The Brewers have been spending their revenue sharing money, although they didn't when Bud owned the team. Since buying the team before the 2005 season, Mark Attanasio has raised the payroll 250%. They've also consistently outspent the Reds for the Reds for the last five years, including this year (by over fifteen million).

Not to mention the Brewers already signed their MVP to a 10+ year deal, as well as much of the supporting cast to long term deals. And Zack Greinke should be joining that group soon. The Brewers had to choose Greinke or Fielder, considering the costs and returns I don't think anyone should fault their decision.

Anyway, there you go. I think this offseason convinced Votto to stay, where as last time, he wasn't going to commit beyond his arbi years. The window is a lot wider now, so a lot of that WIN THIS YEAR OR ELSE pressure is gone.
