A Suggestion For Violent Hits In The NFL

Do you really get a thrill watching guys take cheap shots? I know I don;t watch football for that. That's not what I enjoy about the game. I don't need guys flying around helmet first to get some sort of sick thrill from a guy laid out unconscious.

Grow up. Susupend these assholes, and get them the fuck off the field before they paralyze someone.

I'm all for the big hits and such, but I don't want to see these players seriously injured. Suspensions or hefty fines would be fine by me.

Precisely. Because we have the technology to understand the effect that these hits have on the players, you can't turn a blind eye to these violent hits and the concussions/injuries suffered after wards. I also do believe that added protection doesn't do much because it probably gives the defender the idea that he can get away with more because they're "safer". No helmets are a bold idea, and one that I actually like, but it will probably never happen.

You gotta look at it from the offenses point of view also. What good does a suspension do for the current opponent?

Take Desean Jackson for instance, he goes out of the game and The Eagles miss a very explosive player. While the defensive player who hits him gets to play the rest of the game. Then even if the defensive player gets suspended in the next game, it helps the next team not the Eagles.

No penalty, fine, or upcoming suspension, can make up for a offense losing one of it's best players.

That's not to completely count out suspensions though. Not right that the guy doing the illegal action is able to pay a small fine and play the very next game, while the guy with the concussion won't play for a few weeks.

I just don't like how people are trying to make the fined player seem like the victim. James Harrison gets a slap on the wrist.....let's not forget Joshua Cribbs is the one who truly got fucked and won't get any snaps for a while.


Yes ejections seem harsh, but if I lose my top offensive player. What do I get out of the opponent getting a fine or being suspened from games not against us?

the first hit by harrison was imo legal the 2nd was not so much (not as horrible as a lot of you are making it out to be) the merriweather hit was just uncalled for though blatant hit to the head and really dirty

also the dunta hit was legal as well imo it was more a collision b/c of how fast the play was going and dunta didnt go for the head at all

Probably not, but their advisors are probably doctors who deal with head injuries and the long-term consequences.
This isn't about people playing in the league, but instead the league administrators trying to protect the league's investments.

NFL put very little money at all into injury research. Despite there claims it was Schutt , Bike (adams) , and Riddell that were pumping money into player safety and research. NFL only put in its chump change when there was an outcry about it.
Helmet design was stagnant for almost 15 years. Only "air" linings were added and even then the NFL resisted until they agreed players can wear them so long as the RIDDELL label was still prominent.

There were several tiered helmets ((the 49ers and Bills both had players with similar designs)) and soft helmet designs proposed by researchers during the 90s the league didnt seem to have any interest in putting money into. Much like the NFL ignored artificial turf issues until a "composite" substance was made that still provided the speed advantage of turf.

NFL equipment overall is about 10 years behind where it could be. A good looking but viable solution is out there we just have to wait.

Making helmets that are marketed as safer or concussion-reducing is actually the opposite of what they should do.

That will just empower these guys to use their heads as a battering ram even more.

I woulda worn one. I always hated the facemasks impairment of my field of view.

There was one concept design that always cracked me up. The helmet was essentially all plexiglass and attached to the shoulder pads. It was a very astronaut design.


You ever see Marion Barbers facemask ? Its like an inch from his face. A plexiglass or non extended design may help curtail some of the spearing.
Plexiglass would help player notoriety as there faces would be more recognizable.

Ted Ginns FG kicker bar with huge visor shield was talked about at some point.

Its not up anymore but Riddell had a video up a few years ago when they introduced the revolution. Some pretty slick concepts if your willing to throw away tradition.

I dont understand why its considered a cheap shot to lead with the helmet. Yeah its gonna hurt but idk I dont ever see a helmet to helmet hit or somebody leading with the helmet and think 'wow thats dirty'. IMO I see a facemask or pulling the hair of an opponent dirtier than these things.

Injuries are a part of the game. What about the clean hits that cause injuries? Are we going to make those who injure the other players sit out a few games? Receivers are supposed to be scared running over the middle of the field. It's part of the game.
