Nope. ME was too RPG for me.

And after reading the latest OXM it looks like this game will be too..."All the combat is real-time, but as in Mass Effect, your effectiveness with weapon types relies on what character specializations you've invested in."

That sounds like dice-roll damage infliction to me. If so, I'm out.

What made it too RPG for you? It's really not. ME was as much an action game with some RPG elements as anything (like character building, you do distribute points and level up but that's becoming common in almost every game these days). In ME the shooting isn't that dice roll type, you aim and shoot like any other third person shooter, if you have them in your sights, you're gonna hit them every time. The character spec thing really just limits what weapons you can or can't use.

I honestly think you'd like it if you played it.

I hate RPGs as well, but I absolutely loved Mass Effect.

We've touched on stuff like this in the past Twigg, but this point I don't really get. What's the difference between the damage you do being dependent upon skills you've upgraded mixed with the gun you have and just doing more damage with increasingly better guns (as in, say, a typical FPS)?

Modern western RPG's have gotten so far away from the pure dice-roll stuff of say, Baldur's Gate. You shoot a guy in the head with a sniper rifle in Mass Effect, it might determine your skill with that weapon along with the enemies shielding and your weapons effectiveness, but it's not like it's right there in front of you. It's no different than say, going for a head shot with some guy that's wearing a helmet in say, the old Medal of Honor games.

I suppose I can understand the distaste for menu-based JRPG's (although I'd argue that the difference isn't as great as you'd believe), but in this case, speaking specifically of Mass Effect, it plays like a shooter. Really the only difference is there are quests that have multiple solutions, and there are dialogue segments. The combat is no different than any FPS (in fact, CoD4 would probably be the best comparison, as in multiplayer you effectively "level up" for more powerful guns/weapons).

The longer it goes without any info being released, the more concerned I'm becoming with this game. It must have been reeeaaallly bugged if they pushed back the release so late notice and haven't spoken about it since.

They had one of the main dudes from Sega, forget his name now, on the 1Up podcast right around xmas time. He said the game is all but done but they are trying to iron out several bugs before release. I thought he may have said April?

Maybe he just said "Spring" in general, although Gamestop has a 06/01 release date.

That's what I've heard. But 1) I don't have time to invest in a 50 hour game. I can't believe I've played Borderlands so much. I find this statement to have lulz in it.

SEGA has pissed me off with their previous releases. I found Bayonetta to be blah with some horribly outdated segements that wouldn't even look cool in the PSOne days and they botched the Olympics game again so hard.

I think this might be okay to rent but I don't have high hopes, or cares.

It's really easy to eliminate whatever variation of "dice rolls" there are. Basically, your aim improves as you gain levels (among other things) with certain weapons, depending on your class and the weapons you want to use. Not unlike Borderlands. In fact, other than being 3rd person and having a better story (or any story) it's the exact same as BL.

And ME2 isn't 50 hours even if you visit every planet and exhaustingly collect every resource. It's probably 40 hours at that rate. I did it on my first run through at 22.

Also, there is not necessarily a need to have played ME1. You just won't get the full effect. If you are insistent on not playing ME1, then I would still say you should play ME2. It's the best game on the 360, and arguably the best game I've ever played.

Last, a demo for ME1? It's like 10-15 bucks used in stores, and probably like 5-10 online!

Ok, maybe I'll give it a shot. All of the podcasts were saying that they were over 30 hours into ME2 and were "no where near finished" so I figured at least 50 hours.

I should've picked up ME when it was on sale for $10 a few times. If I get it I want the version with all the DLC though.

i did every single thing possible in ME2 and it took me 31 hours. (outside of pointless scanning of all planets, I did look at them all though.....scanned 1/3 of them)
