Mets lose 8 out of 11; Swept in 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Losing has become the way in Queens, as the Mets have now lowered their record to 15-27 this season by only winning 3 out of the last 11 games, and getting swept by Florida in four games.

"It's embarrassing . We can't see to all get it together at once, between the injuries and being streaky," said Johan Santana, who is 1-4, but has a 3.34 ERA. The latest Mets injury belongs to Jonathon Niese, who will miss 10 days with shoulder tendinitis. "My shoulder is just sore. I need to rest it for a couple of days and I'll be good to go, that's all," said Niese, who is 0-3 with a 5.82 ERA in 7 starts.

The injuries, however, have probably saved Jerry Manual's job. One source has said that if it wasn't for the fact that the Mets have had at least one major player on the DL at all times this season, Jerry would have been fired. "He has an excuse now. If this was their record and the team was healthy, he would have been long gone," said the anonymous team official.

Three new players have joined the Mets this week. C Omir Santos has returned after being called up from AAA, while Henry Blanco was released. SP Bobby Parnell was called up from AAA to replace Niese in the rotation. When asked about the Parnell move, GM Chris Eckenrod said that he "talked to Jerry and he said that he preferred Olly [Perez] as the set-up man for now, so we brought up Bobby as he was our #2 option." The third player is 3B Joe Crede, claimed off of waivers on Thursday. "Joe gives us some insurance right now with David [Wright] gone, and let's us give Tatis a day off here and there," said Eckenrod, who has been actively trying to improve the team this season, to no avail.

Mets Trade For Cliff Lee
Unhappy K-Rod Sent to Seattle

NEW YORK (AP) - After the Philadelphia series last week, closer Francisco Rodriguez had his agent let GM Chris Eckenrod and the Mets know that his client will no longer settle for being a New York Met, and demanded a trade as soon as possible. "It was a shame to see a star player like that so upset with the direction of the team," said Eckenrod. Turns out it could have been for the best.

While early reports had claims of K-Rod being sent with Oliver Perez and others to Texas in exchange for MR Chris Ray and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, those turned out to be false. "We were in talks with the Rangers, but nothing materialized," said Eckenrod. The other team involved was the Seattle Mariners, who have been dangling SP Cliff Lee as trade bait for several weeks. Lee, who is 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA is a perfect fit in a Mets rotation that needed some help. "We felt that a starting pitching would benefit the team more than other other position player, right now," said Eckenrod at a press conference.

The official deal is for the Mets to send Closer Francisco Rodriguez, SP Oliver Perez, SP Ramon Ortiz (who was just acquired yesterday), SP R.A. Dickey, and RF Cesar Puello to the Mariners in exchange for Cliff Lee. "It may deal a blow to our bullpen, but if Lee pitches well enough, we won't even have to use the bullpen," joked Eckenrod.

Yea, I hope. The Mariners were hard to bargain with, but besides K-Rod, these were guys I was fine with parting with. The only reason I didn't mind trading K-Rod was to get a start pitcher in return.

Mets Draft SP; Continue to Spiral Downward

NEW YORK (AP) - On the eve of the final Subway Series of the season, the Mets are looking to be the exact opposites of their New York partners. The Yankees head into tomorrow's game with a 40-26 record, 5 games out of the AL East lead. The Mets, however, are 24-42, 16.5 games out of the NL East. Rumblings of firings have gotten stronger and stronger, and they are starting to get desperate for anything. Help is on the way, hopefully.

Though they don't project him to play in the big leagues this season, the Mets picked up SP Dylan Covey with the 6th pick in the draft. Covey is a projected Cy Young Award winner, and it will be hard for the Mets to even screw him up. Covey has not yet signed, but the Mets have offered around a $4.5 million signing bonus, reports say.

Two more Mets players have also talked to management, demanding trades. Both Fernando Tatis and Rod Barajas are veteran players who have lost their starting position during the season, and want to be traded to a team that will play them. "We will not comment specifically on this situation, besides to say that we are working to find the best solution for both parties," said a low-key GM Chris Eckenrod, who is usually more open about players.

Mets Have Winning Record in July

NEW YORK (AP) - The month of July has come and gone. The All-Star Games and trading deadline have passed us. The Mets, however, are still in the same position they were in June, dead last.

You would have thought that they were going to make a trade at the deadline, especially with an expiring contract in Cliff Lee, who has admitted that he will test free agency, a crushing blow to the Mets organization. The one trade the Mets did make was trade RF Gary Matthews Jr. and minor-league C Josh Thole to Arizona for CL Bob Howry. In 8 games since being traded to the Mets, Howry has 4 saves and a 0.93 ERA.

The injury train has continued, with Jason Bay, Johan Santana, and Cliff Lee all taking turns on the DL. "I don't know what we need to do to avoid these injuries. We have a top-notch conditioning and training staff. I really think it's all coincidence," said manager Jerry Manual.

Speaking of Jerry Manual, sources have told us that the entire Mets coaching staff will be released of their contracts at the end of the season, but will be given the opportunity to renew them after that. "Basically, it's just a safety precaution for the Mets if there is no one better to hire," said the source. In our opinion, it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

The Mets already find themselves dealing with a little bit of controversy. There was an altercation between Fernando Tatis and GM Chris Eckenrod in the clubhouse several weeks ago. Tatis was upset with Eckenrod's comments that Tatis has no right to ask for a trade since the only reason he has a job is because of the Mets. "Where was Tatis before the Mets? Not playing baseball," said Eckenrod. Tatis and Barajas both requested trades due to the lack of playing time, but currently find themselves as New York Mets.

The Mets start off August against the Dimondbacks, Braves, Phillies, and Rockies.

Lee Signs 6-year Extension

NEW YORK (AP) - Cliff Lee was all smiles at a press conference announcing the signings of a 6 years, $84 million contract extension with the New York Mets. "Hopefully I will be finishing my career at the end of this contract, and my wish is to finish it as a New York Met," said Lee, who just last week refused to discuss an extension with the team. Some baseball executives have said that a six year contract is too long for a pitcher who is already 31, but Lee agreed to a smaller monetary value for a longer contract.

The Mets three other upcoming free agents, Joe Crede, Fernando Tatis, and Rod Barajas are not expected to be resigned.

NEW YORK (AP) - The month of August has been sweet for both the Mets and SS Jose Reyes. The Mets finished up the month with a record over .500, then second straight month they have accomplished this. Though this was thought to be standard for the Mets before the season, it is now a big deal when a winning streak occurs. "These guys play hard, and they want to win. It's not a lack of talent or effort," said manager Jerry Manual, who knows that each day and each loss, he is closer and closer to being fired. Sources have said that Manual cannot wait until this happens, because of the situation in New York. "He doesn't like being a lame duck manager. It was never said he was, but it is widely known," said the source.

In other news, Jose Reyes has catapulted himself into second place for the National League batting crown with an insane month of August. Jose batted .391 with 2 home runs, paving the way for the rest of the Mets team. "It's a shame that we are not all hitting at the same time," said Reyes, who has avoided the injury bug for the majority of the season. In other Reyes news, Jose has asked the Mets to begin discussing a contract extension for him. He has been rumored to want $12.5 million per season, up from $11 million now. Reyes contract expires after next season.

Mets Finish Strong, Under .500

NEW YORK (AP) - A disappointing season for the Mets is finally finished, but a solid finish pushed the Mets out of last place, and on the cusp of a .500 season.

The Mets final record was 78-85, with a .479 winning percentage, finishing 25.5 games behind the first place Phillies, who led the league with 103 wins. In a letter written to fans, owner Fred Wilpon said that "this is not what we had in mind for you fans. I promise that we will spend our money wisely, and build a solid team for the next season. Changes will happen, and they will happen quickly."

Jose Reyes was the Mets MVP, leading the team in batting average, VORP, at-bats, runs, hits, total bases, stolen bases, and singles. Carlos Beltran led the team in power, with the most home runs and RBI's, while Jenrry Mejia had the best ERA AT 3.45.

Manager Search Down to Three

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets manager search is down to three candidates after Lou Piniella decided to take the managing job with the Toronto Blue Jays. The three candidates are Bob Geren, most recently of the Oakland A's, Mike Scioscia, who was fired by the Los Angeles Angels, and newcomer Tim Salmon, also of the Los Angeles Angels.

"We like the differences that each candidate brings to the table," said GM Chris Eckenrod. Geren and Scioscia are both great at handling players, while Salmon is a great teaching manager, but still has a way to go with handling players. The thought is that the Mets love what Scioscia brings to the table, and that a manager like him does not become available too often. Geren is actually a better candidate, and Salmon would bring a big name rookie manager to New York.

The Mets plan on announcing their decision in several days.
