Anyone have experience upgrading their hard drive?

I'm looking to upgrade because I have less than 2GB left of my 60GB HDD. I know there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to remove and replace a new hard drive. But my main concerns are transferring my actual saves and such. In one of the "How to" videos the guy mentioned using the back up feature on his PS3 to restore all of his settings but he never went in depth on what that was all about.

Also, I believe there is a specific type of hard drive that you have to use for the PS3?

I have a 500GB external HDD hooked up to my PC right now. Can I use that to temporarily transfer my saves until I swap the HDD. And even so, will I still have to re-download all of my PSN games?

It seems like blade transferred all of his stuff from his original ps3 to a new slim model, ask him about it.

but he doesn't cover the Trophy issue (are they deleted?) and I have a feeling formatting the external HDD is more of a pain in the ass then he makes it sound like.

Formatting the drive is really easy. It looks like it needs to be formatted in FAT32 and you can do it within windows.

It would literally take like 2mins for you to do the on the computer portion.

The PS3 will format it for you. I upgraded my 60gb to a 500 gb. it is simple just make sure you have the right sized screw drivers. If you strip those tiny screws then u are basically fucked

Twigg.......I misunderstood you. I didnt do a physical swap of my HD, tried on the old 60 gig, but I messed up the screw trying to remove it , Then I just ended up selling the damn thing.

But I have backed up my game saves and settings using the PS3 backup feature. It works pretty well, and yes you can hook up your External through the USB and backup all yours stuff on there. When you start backing up it will ask you were you want to store the backup file. Just point it to the USB drive, and it will work no problem.

Once you get the new HD in, you will need to format it first, and then restore the game saves and settings using System Restore, I believe.

When you restore, it will show your user names, with an asterisk. Its just to notate them as being imported from another drive or restore. Just hit triangle, to edit your user name, and you can remove the asterisk, took me a couple days to figure that one out.

Trophies are linked to your PSN and aren't deleted. I'm almost certain as I had a friend who's PS3 died and got a new one and he still has all of his trophies.

Trophies are stored on the PSN servers. They won't show up in your trophy list until you put in the game the 1st time since you upgraded. Even though there will be a few that don't show up they are still counted in your overall trophy count

External only holds media info. If you have a shit ton of PSN games like I do you can't get those on an external. I have well over 45gigs PSN games. External can only hold vids,music,pics. Internal is the way to go to make the PS3 the ultimate media machine

even if you do they are tied to your psn name and you can download them 5x, so you're good

Yeah, but some of the games three or four of my friends downloaded from me so I'm not really good in that respect.

If you backup the system you will not have to. It is saved in the system backup file. Thats why it is a huge file.


Also the download 5 times rule is a little misunderstood. You can download it as many times you want as long as it is on one of 5 activated PS3's with your account info on it

The screws were a bitch. I definitely stripped them a bit. It's like they are made of platinum or something.

Yea quite possibly the worst idea Sony had about the PS3 construction. I can't understand why they put those screws on. I pretty much coudln't remove the screw anymore because the bit drilled chewed through the damn screw head.
