Baltimore Ravens to build statue of Ray Lewis in front of Stadium

Well, that was quick. The Baltimore Ravens are planning to erect a statue of Ray Lewis outside of M&T Bank Stadium less than a week after the team won Super Bowl XLVII in the linebacker's final game.

"I think he set himself apart in Baltimore sports history," owner Steve Bisciotti told ESPN's Jamison Hensley, "and we will certainly look into it and I would not be surprised if there is one in the next year or two."

The statue talk is no surprise. Lewis was the last player remaining from the Super Bowl XXXV win and the only player to be on the roster every year of the Ravens' existence. Thirteen-time Pro Bowler. Two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Arguably the top linebacker to ever play in the NFL. The only other player to match him in Baltimore football lore is Johnny Unitas -- and he has a statue outside of the stadium.

When you're talking about the trinity of Baltimore sports legends, you're looking at Cal Ripken Jr., Unitas and Lewis. Ripken Jr. had his statue unveiled in Camden Yards in September.

The only question is which moment will the statue capture? I vote for the end of his dance -- arms outstretched, feet together, chest bowed and mid-scream toward the sky.

It should be Ripken, Unitas and either Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, or Earl Weaver. No surprise, the white trash Ravens fans will forget about the final three and say it's Lewis. Oh well, it's a losing battle and his career is done.

As for what Bmore said, I'd rather it be Ogden 100% of the way. I'll remember him way more than I'll remember Ray Lewis.

Except everything he's done since the incident in Atlanta has been to rebuild his "brand." I don't buy it for a second. We'll see where all of his community projects are in five years, since he'll be finished playing and getting ready to go into the HOF.

Agreed Ray Lewis is as fake as a three dollar bill and as useful as one during the Ravens Super Bowl run.

You could make an argument that he was the face of Baltimore sports in general since Cal retired (2001 if I recall). Which wasn't hard to do since the Orioles weren't competing and shifted players more often then not. I think its an era thing, Unitas was the face of Baltimore sports in the 50-60's, Palmer owned the 70's, Ripken owned the 80's and 90's, Ray owned the 2000's.

Biggest question is who owns 2010 and beyond? Adam Jones? Joe Flacco?

Flacco for the Ravens no question, especially when he re-signs with the team. Though Baltimore is a huge baseball town despite the Ravens. If the Orioles continue winning, the person who owns the town will be an Oriole. I would say it's not Jones, but more likely Dylan Bundy or Manny Machado.
