Party Down was funny just because the characters on the show were so reprehensible.
 
Arrested Development, as has been stated, is the poster child for this thread. Firefly is up there for me, and while I've never seen Space Above and Beyond if it's truly better than Firefly color me very interested.

One that hasn't been mentioned: Rome. It got good reviews but was just too expensive for HBO to continue (I guess), which lead to a very good, yet very rushed feeling second season. Also, reading some of the plans for the future of Rome (the introduction of Christ would have been awesome), it makes me even more disappointed.

I skimmed the thread so could have missed it but, has anyone mentioned Deadwood? It made it 3 seasons, yeah, and I'm not even sure it was canceled per se (I seem to remember contract disputes, etc...ending it, but I could be wrong). It just kills me that there is no real ending.

Totally forgot about Rome. Loved that show. Really wish they would have continued. As you mention, the future events they could have covered would have been great.

It sucks, but they all deserve it. Jane Lynch is my favorite comedienne and Adam Scott is really great.

Ken Marino is also really funny on Children's Hospital.

Yeah I watched it too...the next day on Netflix Watch Instantly because they always put the episodes on there the morning after and I didn't have Starz.

Heroes should have stopped after Season 1. Awful after. That is the #1 victim of the writers strike. Season 1 is epic, elite even. One of the best seasons of TV you'll ever watch.

As for your "IMO" at the end, HBO does this a lot, albeit, unintentionally.

They rarely let shows go on too long. When the glimpse of quality goes down, its rare to see a show go more than a season beyond that point.
 
Was talking with my friend about this over XBL a bit ago and he suggested Greg the Bunny. I personally remember watching one episode, but don't remember anything about said episode so can't comment.
 
It's been mentioned already, but sci-fi shows get the shaft.. Both Stargate:Atlantis and Stargate:Universe canceled as soon as the shows started getting interesting.. Sci-fi Network needs to remember they made their bones off of rescuing SG1 after it got dropped by Showtime and give these shows a chance to get momentum..

I know a guy who wrote for Heroes, and you are exactly right. He hated the strike and afterwards, because some of his team and then other teams like production had moved on to other things, and you just couldn't get them all to come back. That is why the show suffered in his mind.

On the topic of HBO, they put a lot of money into their shows- its almost like watching a movie. I can see why they have quick trigger fingers. The only show that has really lasted for a long time is Big Love. Another thing they do are short seasons like Eastbound and Down.
