10 out of 16 games he had 3 catches or less, 8 of those games he averaged over 20ypc ...so yeah he is pretty much a deep threat kinda receiver. one game with 8 catches, one with 7 and the rest 5 and under.
Steelers = 29.9 pass attempts per game, 5th to last. It's no wonder Mike had so many 5 catch or less games.
great threat down the field but idk how you really define him as anything else.
IMO
A possession receiver is basically a WR who is going to pick up 1st downs and maintain possession of the ball. They become more important on 3rd downs
On the same team that was 5th to last in passing attempts, Wallace had more third down conversions(18) than Nicks(14), Maclin(11), and Harvin(17). He also had the highest third down average yards per catch with 15.9.
I don't think he's as good a possession receiver as Nicks though. Nicks is the best possession guy of the class, maybe Crabtree could be up there if he had a better QB. So I'm not really trying to pin Wallace up there with as good a possession WR as Nicks, or other elite possession guys, but I think he's every bit as good a possession guy as Maclin or Harvin, and I think he's actually one hell of a possession WR. He's very important to keeping the Steelers offense alive on 3rd downs, especially on 3rd and long.
3rd down breakdown
Nicks: 13 of 14 for 92.8% 3rd down conversion rate. (One of the best percentages in the league)
Maclin: 8 of 11 for 72.72% 3rd down conversion rate.
Wallace: 13 of 18 for 72.22% 3rd down conversion rate.
Harvin: 11 of 17 for 64.7% 3rd down conversion rate.
For the record, this doesn't take into account the number of targets/drops on 3rd down, which I think is very important to the outcome of who we call possession guys. I do however, find it hard to believe that with the Steelers being 5th to last in passing attempts, Wallace would have more targets on 3rd down than anybody else here.
Nicks: 55 1st downs. (79 receptions - 69.6% conversion rate per catch)
Wallace: 48 1st downs. (60 rec -
80% conversion rate per catch)
Harvin: 45 1st downs. (71 rec - 63% conversion rate per catch)
Maclin: 41 1st downs. (71 rec - 64.2% conversion rate per catch)
For perspective
Reggie Wayne: 19 of 23 for 82.6% (72 1stD, 111 rec - 64.86% con. rate per catch)
DeSean Jackson: 9 of 11 for 81.81% (33 total 1stD, 47 rec - 70.21% con. rate per catch)
Roddy White: 29 of 36 for 80% (73 total 1stD, 115 rec - 63.47% con. rate per catch)
Wes Welker: 13 of 18 for 72.22% (47 total 1stD, 86 rec - 54.65% con. rate per catch)
Andre Johnson: 8 of 12 for 66.66% (59 total 1stD, 86 rec - 68.6% con. rate per catch)
Summery: Wallace moves the chains, period. He has fewer catches per game, which is directly related to the 29.9 pass attempts (5th least in league) but converts first downs like nobody else in the league. 8 out of 10 catches go for a 1st down!? Moving chains.
