Big passing yards don’t correlate to championships

Eli played lights out during the playoffs that season.

Vs. Tampa: 20-27, 185 yards, 2 tds. Solid.
Vs. Dallas: 12-18, 163 yards, 2 tds. Solid.
Vs. G.Bay: 21-40, 251 yards, 0 tds, 72.0 rating, 52.5% comp. perc. Not lights out really.
Vs. Patriots: 19-34, 255 yards, 2 tds, 1 int, 87.3 rating, 55.9 comp. perc. Without the 4th quarter heroics, who knows. He just didn't look lights out until late in the game as far as I remember.

I'd say Manning played lights out for one quarter in the playoffs that year, the most important quarter. The 4th quarter of the Super Bowl. The rest of his playoff performance was good, but calling it lights out is putting a little to much salt on them french fries son.

U either need a very, very good defense or an elite QB to win a SB. That has been the case as long as I remember. If you have an average QB your defense has to be dominate. If you have an average defense you must have an elite QB. Having both is just icing on the cake but no body wins without one of the 2.

Whats even more odder of a stat is pretty much look at every team that has won a superbowl in the last 20 years and every one of them except Tampa, Baltimore and the giants, have an elite level QB.

Ravens and Bucs fielded ATG defenses those SB years. While Eli wasnt what some may consider Elite he was solid with a good run game and a good defensive team. Giants were well balanced that season.

Re-watch those games. You can see he made a lot of great reads and throws. That Green Bay game is actually a good game by Eli. The stats don't show it but he put the team in a position to win in each of those games.

This post lacks context. I question whether you remember those games, or even watched them in the first place.

Those were tremendous postseason road performances. Especially the GB game, which if I recall had awful weather and Eli consistently found Plaxico on huge third downs.

He was part of a legendary fourth quarter comeback in the SB, and you could argue that as his worst overall performance out of the four games. Think about that.

That's kind of the point. It's not about one thing or the other. The great teams, the ones that win championships, have balance.

The 2000 Baltimore Ravens are an exception, not a rule. And even they had a decent run game and a QB who understood his role was simply not to fuck up.

Don't be mad bro. My point was that the giants won the SB because of some dam good defense and not because of their QB. Your point was that Eli Manning played lights out which really had nothing to do with what this thread was about outside of me calling Eli avg. Which he dam well is and I don't need to prove anything about that because he's avg and its a well known fact.

back on topic, while this is an interesting statistic, i dont know if its applicable. honestly, with the contact rules being what they are, with how quarterbacks are protected, and with all the score raising rule changes that have taken place, you can almost throw out the early half of the record books. The game is really different even compared to 10 years ago. Parity has worked.

the NFL has worked tirelessly to bring randomness and an "anyone can win the big one" mentality to the sport, and it has worked, this golden goose is laying eggs like a motherfucker in the modern era and the biggest shot at competition to that throne (the NBA) is about to lose its season to a lockout, so theres no reason to doubt the trend will continue (if it aint broke, dont fix it). there isnt a statistic that can really help you predict who might win a superbowl. the Packers last year had the #2 ranked defense yeah but Aaron Rodgers kicked it into a gear we never saw before in the playoffs and whatever the defensive stats were, Rodgers won the ring for that team last year. That, and they were simply better than the Steelers, it was a bad matchup for Pittsburgh.

There's just too much shit that can happen in the course of a game and over the course of a season that needs to break right for a team to win a Superbowl to ever quantify even partially in statistics, and especially from pre free agency era statistics.

I still believe defense + balance wins championships. Regardless of their offense, the SB champs are generally top 5 defensive teams. You have an even better chance if you're top 5 against the run. My reasoning being that even in a pass happy league it's a lot easier for a good defense to shut down a one dimensional team. There are exceptions, but even then the defense usually has shown up well in the playoffs.

BTW, Eli was outstanding during that SB run. Yeah, his stats weren't all-world but he made all the right throws at the right time throughout the playoffs. And the one stat that matters, aside from the wins, is that he only threw the one pick during that whole run and that was on a tip (by his own guy iirc). Yes, overall he's average (maybe a little better) but for a month he was great.
