Brett Favre's career from 2007 - present

I think people ended their assessment of Brett Favre's ranking amongst the greatest QBs of all-time after the 2005 and 2006 seasons when Favre looked like he was at the end of his career. Even in those years, when he was breaking Dan Marino's career passing records, it was met with a shrug of the shoulders. People refused to move Favre ahead of guys like Elway and even Marino/Young after Favre became the winningest and statistically greatest QB of all-time.

Favre had an amazing resurgence in 2007, and in 2008 he played well for 2/3rds of the season. In 2009, Favre has looked lights-out...last night against GB he threw some incredible passes.

My point is that as Favre continues to distance himself statistically from the other QBs, and as Favre continues to play at a high level, when do we give him credit for these "end-of-career" achievements and start thinking of him as possibly THE greatest QB of all-time?

My Favre homerism aside, you speak the truth. There are some people that hate Favre so much that they will never give him his due even when the stats do not bear out their arguments. No rational discussion of GOAT can happen without Favre's name being in the top 3 (Montana, Favre, Elway) but you get people here on VSN creating all time QB lists that do not even have Favre as a top 20 option :laugh:

How is Marino better than Favre? What accomplishment does Marino have that Favre doesn't?

Graham is interesting, but he only played 10 years, with 4 of them (his 4 best years, BTW) in the AAFC. I think a case could be made for putting Favre above Graham.

Same with Unitas. He had a reputation as a "big-game" QB after his performance in the 1958 championship game, but his subsequent post-season performances were awful. He was the QB in one of the biggest title upsets in history, when the Browns beat the Colts in 1964. He was also involved in the biggest upset (SB III), playing horrendously in both games. He was equally bad in SB V, and the Colts won because Earl Morrall relieved Unitas and led the team to victory. Unitas threw 7 postseason TDs in his career vs. 10 INTs, and his career post-season rating is 68.9.

What will be interesting is when Peyton Manning breaks all of Favre's records and he already has one championship to match Favre's, so if he gets another I'd like to see where he finishes on the list.

As for the topic, it is ashame that he retirement fiasco has clouded people's perception of him, but I would also say that due to the media coverage of him people were tired of Favre before all of that. Either way when he's gone I think people will come to realize that he's a top 3-7 all-time great

I do think he regressed after Holmgren left. He made so many stupid decisions in big games it didnt make sense. For some emotional personal vendetta or motivated Monday night game he can play like perfection....but a playoff game with season on the line he throws 6 picks ?

Too wreckless for me to put him over Montana , despite being a gun slinger , Marino has the reputation of being a better pure passer.GB would beat Youngs Niners with inferior talent...yet lose to Elway with similar talent in a SB.
I think that mentally bookmarked Elway ahead of Favre for many people.

At the end of the day just too many big games literally thrown away for no reason and out of sheer carelessness for him to be higher than 3rd.

He broke every individual QB record in fewer games than it took the previous record holder to set. The INT record would mean more if he didn't also have the TD record, which he broke 2 season ago.

Favre has an TD/INT ratio of 469/311. He's +158. George Blanda used to have it an had a ratio of 236/277, -41. I think he can live with having both records.

Favre is unquestionabley the greatest regular season QB. Unfortunately, after Holgren left his clutch, big, game, playoff performances don't allow me to put him as GOAT.

Favre isn't even the greatest GB (playoff) QB. Look at Brett's playoff numbers and Starr's playoff numbers and there is no comparison.

I love Brett, but sorry senser, Brett is not GOAT. Too many playoff brain cramps. I don't blame playoff loses solely on Brett, but even when the other facets of the team didn't perform well (4-26 Philly, D and Run game NYG) Brett still had the ball in his hands with a chance to win playoff games, and ended them with horrible ints. That's not GOAT. I agree with top 10-15ish). Never really ranked all time QB's, so I really haven't seriously thought about where I'd put him.

It's not the ints (number or ratio) that bothers me, it's when they came. They came at very clutch moments in playoff games.

He avg's 1.1 interceptions per game. Montana averages 0.75. It's not that big of a deal, they both pretty much throw 1 per game.

The only reason people bring this up is because it's whats freshest in there memory on his 22 int year.

Like I said, it's not the number of ints that bother me, it's the playoff ints that do.
Do the same thing with playoff ints, and include Starr in your list. Let's see where Brett ends up.. He (Brett) had some of his biggest brain cramps during some of the biggest games.

I'll give Brett Favre some credit, yesterday, he looked terrifc.

He was laser sharp last night. GB got NO pressure on him. Yet I think Rodgers fared very well amongst all the pressure he faced. I really think that if you give Rodgers an average (doesn't even need to be good or above average) OL and running game, he will be one of the best in the league. I was amazed at what he did last night.

This year, and last year, he had something GB really never had, and that is a running back.

True. The running game has been a disappointment.

Green Bay really never had that dominating running back like what Favre has right now.

I still think Minneasota is a BIT better then Green Bay, but we'll see how Favre does in week 10 and beyond.

As a team QB, he may not be considered great because he is blamed for play off losses.

But most of this thread is pointless to say anything ,other than, individually,among QBs

Brett Favre having to carry things is overstated , he played like the whole thing was on his shoulders which it wasnt. Numerous games , and far too many in the playoffs were lost because of that mentality.

2. 1.1 to .75 is a mile and a half when your comparing the cream of the crop and trying to seperate the greatests of all time. Everything is magnified. You have a guy who rarely turned the ball over was as efficient and great under pressure as anyone ever....low and behold he has 4 rings to the "gun slingers" 1. It makes a difference.

Name me one other HOF player on the offensive side of the ball for the Packers during the Favre era. Being a serviceable RB is good for the regular season but it takes more than that to get yards on a playoff caliber defense. Elway and Marino are two other QB's that lacked a complimentary player on offense but at least Elway had Terrell Davis' help to win his 2 Superbowls and Davis would have been a lock for the HOF if injury hadn't ended his career prematurely.

Rings are a team achievement and by that logic, Terry Bradshaw is as good as Joe Montana. Favre has 3 MVP's if you want to compare individual achievements outside of records.

I still think Montana was the GOAT but Favre is legitimately part of the discussion and a strong case can be made on his behalf.
