Pain Leaves the Body Physically, but Not Emotionally

Shock. An emotional state of disbelief. This was what I was feeling at this moment. Sure, we won - that's great. But after seeing Breann with Dan and hearing Rodney's threatening voice - suddenly my football career, and more importantly my life, was in serious danger. As the team started to change to get back on the bus, I made my way over to Delone.

"Nice running D, you really saved us."

Delone had an annoyed and confused expression on his face. Picking up his bag, he just shook his head and walked out to the bus taking us to the hotel.

An hour later the bus pulled into the parking lot as we made our way into the hotel. I sat my bag on the floor and collapsed onto my bed. I reached into my pocket to pull out my iPod and as I placed the buds in my ears, I turned on some Trey Songz and drifted slowly into sleep...

I woke up to see Delone's face right in front of me. Then I looked at the clock beside me on the counter; 1:30 AM.

"Damn, it's way too early. What was I doing?"

"You were really twitching, pretty badly actually. I thought you were having a seizure or just a bad dream."

No wonder why my body feels weird after I wake up. It's like I'm reliving parts of my life.

"Nah, I'm good. Hey, sorry 'bout today by the way."

"It's fine. So what's up? Something on your mind?"

I didn't know whether to tell D or not, but due to my exhaustion I decided to spill the beans.

"Actually, yeah there is."

"See someone in the stands you didn't expect to see, huh?"

Damn, Delone's good.

"Exactly. How'd you know?"

"I noticed you were looking into the stands a lot during pre-game warmups. The one time during the game you did a double take, leading me to believe either you say Taylor Swift wearing your jersey or someone you didn't want to see."

"And unfortunately it was the latter, haha."

"Figured so. I saw this one dude like that during my freshman year."

"Really? How'd you handle it?"

"He did. Long story."

"Eh, I'll sleep on the bus ride home anyways. Just tell me."

Delone shrugged his shoulders and cleared his throat.

"Alright. So I was kind of like you coming out of high school. Big time star, won Mr. Football in Ohio, etcetera."

"Yeah, continue."

"Anyways, I decided to come here to Syracuse in hopes of resurrecting the program. The old coach, Robinson, had me share carries during my freshman year. I ran for over 700 yards and things were looking up for my next season."

"And then the hip injury, right?"

Then Delone's facial expression turned to one of sadness. Maybe I'm just making him repeat bad on-the-field memories?

"Dude, if you don't want to talk about this, it's cool."

"Nah, I'll tell you. Anyways, once I arrived at Syracuse, I met this man - the same man I told you I saw in the stands that day."

Why does this sound familiar?

"He took me down to this apartment...somewhere off-campus. Then he revealed to me this sports gambling operation, and wanted me to take a part in it."

"I was scared, I didn't know what Rodney was going to do with me. After those first few games, I was making money and that threw my entire mindset off."

"Of course, money is a great motivator. Did he pull the three strikes thing with you?"

"Yes..."

"And?"

I gulped again and spoke with a hint in fear in my voice.

"I struck out today."

"Fuck! I was hoping you haven't yet."

"Did you strike out?"

"You know how I missed the 2007 season?"

"Yeah. He was the one that..."

"Yes, he fucked up my hip."

"I need out of this...right now. How can I?"

"Honestly, you need to get away. Now I don't think he'll try to fuck with you during the rest of the season, but after that...I'd imagine he'll try to pull some shit. Go back home or something, just get the hell out of Syracuse."

"You didn't get out, did you?"

A tear started to roll down Delone's eye. I have never seen him get so emotional over something, even during a football game. It looked like however Rodney injured Delone's hip and took away part of his collegiate career, the pain still hasn't gone away.

I knew right there that Rodney wasn't fucking around, and I would listen to Delone's advice. I needed to get out of Syracuse, whether it would be during Christmas break...

...or for good.

The entire week I waited by my phone, wondering if I would hear Rodney's threatening voice. Thankful to say I didn't hear a peep from him, which also worried me in a sense. Was he planning something already? Did I have time to get out of Syracuse before it was too late? Those thoughts were running through my mind until the first play of the game.

"Paulus drops back to pass, looks to his right, fires...and it's caught by Woy! He makes a man miss and is pushed out after a 20 yard gain! Looks like he might be breaking out of his slump today."

"That's what I'm talking about, yeah!"

Unfortunately, Greg decided to throw to the other team for the 19th time this season, and that ended our scoring chances. Louisville drove right down the field for the first score of the day, but then our offense got to clicking again.

"Third and 13, ball on the Louisville 14 yard line. Here's the snap, Paulus looks to his left, lobs it up for Woy...and he brings it down! Touchdown Syracuse!"

And I was back with that catch. Louisville decided to throw double and triple teams my way - anything to slow me down. That's when my roommate, Mr. Carter, decided to go off. 13 yards to the right, 15 to the left, 9 up the middle - he led us down the field by himself in the third quarter and eventually got into the endzone to make it a 24-20 game.However, this game would not have a happy ending...for us.

As the clock struck zero, we fell one game farther away from bowl eligibility and I grew one week closer to getting out of Syracuse.
