Pitchfork's Camp review describes exactly how I've felt about Gambino for about a year now.

The criticisms against Donald are valid. It’s really hard to play the uncool card when a hip-hop hipster revolution has long been televised and I agree that he comes off as insecure as hell, but when I listen to Hold You Down, You See Me, Sunrise, etc. all that shit is the last thing that comes to my mind.

I appreciate his ability to rap about his feelings of "lack of blackness" because I remember having similar feelings when I was younger, but my biggest qualm with him is he tends to harp on and dramatize his outsider status as though he *really* had it rough. It grates on you after a while. Even back on Culdesac it started to wear on me, but when you factor his age and the landscape of hip-hop back when he was younger it kinda makes some sense in terms of the Sufjan Stevens concert shit.

I'm not going to say Pitchfork isn't credible. I've said it is multiple times and I'm not going to look like a hypocrite and change my mind right now. In fact, I've said that Pitchfork is the most reputable review source. I loved when they gave My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy a 10 because it felt like it earned it.

That being said, I can safely say that I do not feel this review is being objective at all. In fact, I feel that it's being quite subjective and that the score reflects the reviewer's biased opinion on Donald.

I sort of expected a bad review, since his mixtapes weren't generating much hype on that website. I remember wondering why his EP hadn't been reviewed. I thought it might have to do with it being an online release, but most of Odd Future's stuff and The Weeknd's stuff was reviewed and it was released online. At this point in December, I just assumed Pitchfork wasn't going to review it. And while I expected a 5 or 6 if they didn't like it, a 1.6 is simply insulting. It says that the album has zero merit.

The reviewer doesn't seem to understand Donald's predicament upfront. He criticizes him for saying the he was only black kid at a Sufjan Stevens concert and responds by saying that Jay-Z and Beyonce were spotted at a Beach House concert. I don't believe the comparison is fair at all. Donald's predicament refers to his childhood and how the possibility of a black nerd seemed impossible. Look at his stand up where he talks about black nerds. What Donald is saying, and what the reviewer fails to understand, is there is a certain standard on how black people are supposed to act. The reviewer mentions how not every black kid is expected to act like 50 Cent. Well, I'm sure growing up in the ghettos of Atlanta, that much is very expected. There are certain expectations that were a lot more relevant 10 years ago when Donald was in high school, Kanye still hadn't come out with an album, and rap mostly consisted of mainstream gangster rap. Donald is allowed to rap about how he didn't exactly fit into that mold. He does so and does so well.

I agree with pitchfork a large majority of the time. That being said, I don't understand their consistent praise for Drake as the next Marvin Gaye. I also think that this review serves more as a personal attack to Donald than a truly objective review.

Donald was a coddled theater kid who went to an artsy private high school and NYU. He had plenty of crowds in which he could have "fit in" growing up. The whole "look at me I'm a poor black introvert" card was played in about 03. Donald is just a sellout trying to get big. His standup routine and music are both geared towards the mainstream and he's admitted as much in interviews.

There is nothing wrong with that, do what you do, idgaf, but it's perfectly reasonable for a reviewer to call him on it if and when it comes across as disingenuous.

Absolutely. He's an upper-middle class black kid who graduated from a top university. I understand that he's rapping about his experiences, but it's really hard to sympathize with the "troubles" all of that brings. Being called an "oreo" definitely sucks and I understand being hurt, but it's pretty hard to justify sounding bitter about it damn near a decade later on an album. He must have really taken that shit to heart as a child.

Also, having seen Donald perform with Derrick Comedy 20+ times, he's easily the most cartoonish and annoying in the group. Like, he would have gotten a role in that new Three Stooges film had he not been black. He ruined almost every good scene they did.

As some sort of weird qualifier, he is a nice dude. I feel bad hating on him because of that, but I really don't enjoy his stuff. He's good on Community because he has/had Abed.

Yeah, the more I listen to Camp the more I prefer the EP. Still a good album, but the EP was better.
