[PC] DayZ

I just respawned and ran to the top of a hill, there is literally nothing but trees for like a hundred miles around me...
 
Everything looked like it was installed fine, and it froze when I tried to join a server. Now, I'm having problems with DayZ not loading when I launch Combined Ops. :(

I'll try to sort it out tomorrow.

I'm a fan of the game but I think I'm waiting until it gets to at least beta before I play it again. Just lost a 10 day character with a L85A2 AWS because bandaging wouldn't work. It's frustrating, to say the least. The game would be amazing without the bugs.

I know you need ARMA 2 and ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead, which comes as a package on Steam called ARMA 2: Combined Operations. Beyond that I'm not real sure.
 
In order to run Day Z, you currently need ARMA 2: Combined Ops, the latest ARMA beta patch, and the latest Day Z mod files.

These are the instructions that I followed to get it to work on my PC if you want an idea of how it works:

It's not hard to set up once you have everything.

Combined Ops runs for $30 MSRP. The lowest I've seen the bundle go for is $15 a few months ago on Amazon, and I'd be surprised if you'll see a much better deal than that given the popularity of Day Z.

The creator is also working on a standalone Day Z program. Though I'm not quite sure if he's going to go the route of Minecraft and charge for access while it's still in development.
 
what i think is sweet is the perma death. u really have to play a strategic game of survival. are u playing padman? what do you think?

seems like from the video i watched tonight that you have to worry more about other players rather than the zombies.

have u played the arma games? if so what do u think of those? does the mod add on basically kill the arma game? meaning if you have the day z mod installed can u still play the arma game as well or is it one or the other
 
I like the survival aspect of it, but it can be a little daunting. You start off with just a pack containing painkillers, a bandage, and a flashlight. You're completely on your own finding weapons and equipment, and it can be hard. The most I've found so far was an ammo cache and some road flares.

I haven't run into any players yet, but you really can't underestimate the zombies. If you take one misstep around one, they'll be on you like stink on shit, and you can have a hard time losing them once you aggro them. It also sucks if you spawn a new character at night because the zombies appear to be attracted to the flashlight if you use it, and you can't see much of anything if you don't use it.

Now, there are also some glitches. One of the more prominent ones right now is a graphical glitch that I've experienced when there are a lot of buildings in my FOV, and it really limits how much you can see. I also just experienced a glitch where I opened a door, and when I tried walking through the doorway, I ended up with a broken leg with no way to fix it.

I haven't played the ARMA games past the tutorial, but you should still be able to play them even after you install Day Z. There are "launchers" that you can download that can easily turn off the mod and let you play the base games.
 
I think the most frustrating part for me was having no idea which buildings were enterable and which weren't, that put me in some tight spots. I'm sure you get accustomed to that pretty quickly though.
 
one of the videos i watched said the servers are real time. So if you play on a server where its night time, you will be at night. The vid also said that your player will save and carry from server to server

I don't think the servers are in real time (at least not all of them). I've joined a few US servers at night only to play in the middle of the day in the game and vice versa.

The servers do save your character's location and status when you leave or get disconnected.
 
i see what u guys mean about the buildings. the dude i watched ran all the way over to this one area he spotted from his sniper scope. he gets there and its nothing but building you cant enter.

i think in a beta it might be more enjoyable. its seems like its full of little issues that can hamper an otherwise excellent idea. not saying bugs because the videos i watched only showed clipping issues. but not being able to enter buildings, and not spawning where you left off....sound effects and bandits...the game was meant to be a zombie survival game, not a human survival game....but it seems that everyone plays like a bandit

how do you even hook up with friends?
 
You have to just join the same server and find eachother. I have some friends from high school that are really really into this, they spend hours just chilling in one place and spotting for each other. I dunno if I could ever get into it that much.

we need a team VSN, roam around and boss newbs for gear...or put a bullet in their heads. i'm with the guy from the first video in the OP, killing players is just part of this game. think walking dead an Shane's betrayal, you gotta do what you gotta do.
 
Once you 2 play a bit more lemme know if its worth the time. That world z looks much more interesting and polished to me and it doesnt take 2/3 diff games and hacks and shit. What are the specs needed to run this shit?

My laptop is 2 and a half years old and it runs perfectly fine on low settings for me, and still looks pretty decent. I'd be down for some posse action whenever.
