Dear NCAA.. stop ranking teams this early in the season

A Playoff fixes everything, and would make a great sport with the most irrelevent postseason possible, into a great sport with a great postseason.

It would also make these fraudulent polls into meaningless "guides"...which is exactly what they should be.

The BCS factors in those rankings, and they account for 1/3rd of the info. that factors into the BCS rankings. So, they're not exactly meaningless...in fact, they're very much relevant.

I think a playoff would generate more money for everyone....except the good 'ol boy bowl people, who talk about bullshit like "tradition" when all it really comes down to less money for them with a playoff scenerio.

I really want to love college football, and would probably get into it just as much as I do the NFL if it had a playoff. As it is, I just kinda like it, because it's really just a bunch of games that don't mean shit, leading up to a postseason of exhibitions, with the exception of one game.

It'll never be perfect there's always an overrated team.. but would Boise State be #5 in the country after 6 weeks? I doubt it.

Ole Miss was never the 4th best team in the country. Thursday didn't need to happen for that statement to be true. Penn State was never the 5th best team in the country.. Saturday Night didn't need to happen for that statement to be true.

By ranking teams in the preseason.. you're basically creating an escalator to the top using rankings that were probably already way off.

Um, why not? Are they any more likely to lose between now and then? If anything, they are more likely to debut at 5 in a week 6 poll because you'll have had enough conference games to see other supposed good teams get knocked off. There are no teams left to rank ahead of Boise at this point, whether you had the polls in the beginning or later won't change the results on the field, teams are losing left and right.

The rankings will still be way off in week 6 IMO. You are telling me that Boise St isn't going to be top 5 next week, or the week after that? When exactly are we going to find out about them, given that they don't play anyone else all year?

Well it does matter quite a bit actually, because how a win/loss is viewed by the pollsters is super dependent upon the rankings. Iowa made a Superman leap into the rankings after beating #5 Penn St...why? Because they beat the 5th ranked team in the country. Everyone seems to forget that if not for some last-second heroics, they would've lost to Northern Iowa. Washington became ranked after beating USC...why? Because they beat a highly-ranked team, and then proceeded to lose the week after.

It's not only if you win or lose, it's who you lose to, and what their rank was...and for that reason, people want to see the preseason polls eliminated.

This obviously isn't true since I can name more than 2 teams that have a shot at the national title. I know what you're trying to say but the constant complaining and exaggerating is annoying. It is flawed that some teams get handicapped by preseason polls though and the BCS would be a lot better if they fixed the polls.

But on the other hand, NOT having the pre-season and early-on polls would make a bunch of the early-season meetings of bigger schools harder to market. For example, the Boise St v. Oregon game would be a little harder to market (not impossible, just harder) than #14 Boise v. #16 Oregon, and the same could be said of the BYU/Oklahoma game, as well as other week-2 match-ups.

This is the media and the school's problem. Preseason poll or not people are still gonna watch. I'm sure ESPN/ABC/CBS would still use the same basic criteria to decide which games to show and promote, there just wouldn't be any ranking #s next to the teams.

PSU were ranked 8 (I think ) in pre-season and proceed to beat Akron , Cuse and somebody else that nobody cares about . They move to number 5 because of this which is retarded THEN Iowa beats PSU and makes a stupid jump into the top 15 because they beat the 5th ranked team ...... but how good was PSU in the first place? This is where it starts to lose itself for me

And as for Boise I think their bowl victory a few years ago + Utah whooping Bama changed peoples perception on the "smaller" conferences . Plus at this point there is no team more deserving than Boise at 5 ......

I also think people need to face up to the fact that there is not many good teams in CFB right now . I know it sounds negative but there isin't ..... outside of Florida - Texas and Bama it's a big group of teams who can all lose to eachother and smaller teams on the day .

The sooner ND , Michigan , Miami (U) , UT and co get back on track the better imo

If every team finishes undefeated (obviously impossible, I know), how many teams are given a chance to play for the national title game? Two. And smaller schools aren't handicapped...they're straight up removed from the equation all together. Non-BCS teams who finish undefeated would need a miracle from God himself to reach the national title game. It's the most unfair system in this world of sports.

I think it's a little naive to think that if the pollsters weren't allowed to release a poll until week 5 or 6 or whatever that they wouldn't already have an idea of how they'd rank the teams before the season and adjust that behind the scenes until Week 5 or 6 when they can officially make it public.

Most of the media were speculating on how if BYU went undefeated they would have a great shot at the NC ..... and what was one of the reasons? because of what Utah did

The perception has indeed changed since them wins , not to the point where it's even with bcs conferences but it's changed to some degree

Like I said , I don't think much would change this year if we did the poll in week 6 , there just isin't that many ELITE teams in the nation right now . Outside of the top 3 anybody can beat anybody it seems (within reason) . Which is making for plenty of highly ranked teams being beat
