Do NFL scouts talk like this for TV or all the time ?

One thing that has always bothered me about the NFL draft.

Analyzing a WR "This guy reminds me alot of Calvin Johnson , just not as fast and not as freakish I have him going in the 3rd round"

DE "I see alot of Jason Taylor in him. He doesn't get off as quick and doesn't have that top end speed Jason did but he has huge upside"


Which brings up my two questions.

If player X ACTUALLY reminded you of Calvin Johnson or Jason Taylor why is he projecting 3rd ? Why doesnt he remind you of Ramses Barden or Brian Robinson instead ?

Is this why NFL teams get clueless after the first rounds they have some yahoo scout comparing every undersized DE to Taylor and every RB to Pederson or Bush ?

The segments are very cartoony but I like how Sport Science actually ranks these potential draftees along the average players they actually physically match.

FYI Espn and NFLN have talking heads I expect this from...but some of these guys are labeled former scouts , personell guys etc.

I've stopped watching those people on TV. They are all full of shit. I am even starting to doubt Mike Mayock after seeing a report on rotoworld about how one scout called Sharrif Floyd a media creation. Watched some of him and he looks far from being the drafts top DT (and definitely not a Warren Sapp clone). I'm not sure there is anyone I see on TV that I trust anymore.

This is what I do now.

When it's all over, I see who the Rams picked, and then catch up on the capsules of the guys i've never heard of. Then, I take all of that info with a grain of salt, and wait till the preseason to see these guys actually play.

I used to watch the draft, and "root" for certain picks, but I realized it's pointless. In reality, I know nothing, and honestly the scouts, "draftniks", and GM's probably don't know a ton more than I do. Beyond the premium picks, most of these teams just draft guys who fit the scheme, and then cross fingers that they work out.

I think a big reason why the talking heads compare these prospects to the elite talent in the league is because a lot of casual fans simply are too lazy to be able to compare these prospects to players they actually are similar to.

What sounds better to the average Joe fan?

Geno Smith is a lot like a young Donovan McNabb

or ..

Geno Smith has ideal size for a QB, possesses good accuracy on throws, but played in a conference with less than stellar defense and in an offense known to inflate stats, etc etc

I do agree though.. more often than not.. you will hear lazy scouting comparisons. This happens more often with black QB's and white WR's. The black QB is always Vick or Cam Newton, the white WR is always Wes Welker.

Drew Bennett was a college QB...such an unlikely guy to be a 1000-yard WR in the NFL. Jags tried to duplicate with Matt Jones, but Bennett was smart and Jones was retarded.

I am joking of course. But the lazy racial comparisons happen all too frequently at VSN also. Who can forget steeljake's infamous proclamation that Jordan Shipley was "a carbon copy" of Wes Welker?
